It's really nice to be using a platform where features appear in the web version first. It's possible to turn off boosts entirely or block them from individual people, but apparently not in the app Sara's using:https://mastodon.social/@SaraSoueidan/109267087284331115"Until Mastodon gets a "Turn off retweets" feature, I am definitely not following too many more people here. …”

@jyasskin Given mastodon purposely does not implement quote tweeting I wonder if folks would consider this kind of too bad form. I honestly don't know. (Also the cross-server link is awkward...)

@wanderview @jyasskin Why not comment on the original thread and boost that?

@ondra @wanderview The best uses of this form of writing are when a complete thought is visible in one toot. People reading it shouldn't have to click through to see what I mean, although the context should also be available to people who want to investigate.

@jyasskin The "link" to the original thread is included when replying. Even for others finding the thread from elsewhere. But I get what you mean. I usually either include enough context in my response to be boostable on its own or boost both the original post and my reply in rapid succession. If you'd be interested to read more about the omission of quoting, a quite comprehensive recent post: https://bsd.network/@ellotheth/109256791348809887@wanderview

@ondra The goal is to avoid dogpiles, so I think the rule has to just be to avoid punching down. A boosted reply could be just as bad as a toot with a quote.

@jyasskin I don't have enough experience with Twitter or data to say whether this helped or not. Especially since the fediverse population was very specific at least until recently.

@ondra Oh, I totally buy that the changed default helps reduce toxicity at scale. It's just that when people do have the energy to override the default, I think the content matters more than the form.
