One problem with moving servers is that I don't see a way to keep getting notified for interactions with the old account, and the old account disables its notifications screen while it's redirecting to the new one, so I can't even check two places.#MastodonGrowingPains

@scottjenson @ellen This adds up to making it hard for new people to join, which I think was the UX problem that started this thread. It's expensive to vet a new account, and the people trying to make that new account aren't yet invested enough to pay that cost themselves. So to expand past a niche, we'll have to plan for funding that vetting, which in large companies is called a #TrustAndSafety team.

@scottjenson @ellen It's taking @Gargron@mastodon.social 14-hour days to moderate the easiest-to-join instance, and his Patreon is only pulling in, IIRC, €7k/month. That's not sustainable.

@ondra That mentions moving follows over but not replies. If you reply to, say, https://mastodon.social/@jyasskin/109252796673806447, does it @ this account instead?

@ondra It would, but it's disabled in the settings:

It's really nice to be using a platform where features appear in the web version first. It's possible to turn off boosts entirely or block them from individual people, but apparently not in the app Sara's using:https://mastodon.social/@SaraSoueidan/109267087284331115"Until Mastodon gets a "Turn off retweets" feature, I am definitely not following too many more people here. …”

@ondra @wanderview The best uses of this form of writing are when a complete thought is visible in one toot. People reading it shouldn't have to click through to see what I mean, although the context should also be available to people who want to investigate.

@ondra The goal is to avoid dogpiles, so I think the rule has to just be to avoid punching down. A boosted reply could be just as bad as a toot with a quote.

@ondra Oh, I totally buy that the changed default helps reduce toxicity at scale. It's just that when people do have the energy to override the default, I think the content matters more than the form.

It would be really nice if opening a mastodon.wrongserver.social link would automatically open the toot in the Mastodon PWA I've installed. I think you'd need a central coordination domain to do it with 3p cookies, and those are going away anyway. @sgoto, can #FedCm do it? Could protocol handlers, maybe, if we expect the installed server to register mastodon: or activitypub: or something?#WebStandards

@ondra @dotproto They don't thread, for one. You get a flat list of all the replies to a post, with no indication of which ones are replying to each other.Pinafore ... doesn't even show that there _are_ replies?? So you have to click every interesting post just in case?
