@explorergraceAe, I'm guessing this is the cause of the 403 at m.social. So it's a good thing people are emigrating from there; it will take some of the load off their servers.@fracturedopal

@explorergrace @fracturedopalBTW I love the way the 'verse can scale by adding new instances, which adds new admins/ mods, as well as increasing the resilience of the platform (the 'verse needs no Fail Whale), and the cultural diversity of the network (themed instances, geographical instances like our .nz ones etc). Titter and other walled gardens scale by adding more cloud servers, without any of those other benefits.

@strypey @fracturedopal Yeah the entire fediverse seems to be expanding at the moment. It's good to see people seeking out, or starting, their communities as a bunch of them who landed in social by default spread their wings.Ths influx doesn't seem to be slowing down much so far either, which is fascinating.

@explorergraceVeterans have seen this a few times, with mass exodus (plural of exodus?) from FB after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, from Tumblr after they got fussy about adult content, and a number of times from Titter, after various scandals and purges. It's always fascinating to see who sticks around, and who drifts back to the datafarms. We seem to be getting a lot of quality immigrants in this wave, especially from kiwi Titter, so I hope lots will stay long term :)@fracturedopal

A couple of the waves of fedi immigrants came after events like Titter doing a big purge of accounts perceived (rightly or wrongly) to be alt-right troublemakers. @explorergraceA few people helped the newbies set up their own instances, which they liked because they could set their own rules, and we liked because they could be easily identified and blocked/ defederated if need be. At least one of the fedi software projects (Pleroma) came out of that first big wave. From memory, some of the mod features we have now (eg followers-only posts, blocking users rather than just muting them) were creative responses to the headaches they caused.@fracturedopal

@strypey @fracturedopal I got what you meant 👍 I love how adaptable the fediverse is, and how easily we can all carve out our own spaces and reach across them/ignore each other as required.I've meet so many new people over the past few days, from my own instance and others, and the overwhelming majority of them have been awesome. Likewise the vast majority of established members have been welcoming and friendly. It's just been really nice all around.
