@feld Are you thinking something like Wechat? (from a technical standpoint, that thing seems pretty cool. I'll bet that there are surveillance measures hidden all over it, though.)

WeChat and Alipay helped launch China's economy from like 14T to 50T by massively increasing the velocity of money / reducing friction.

@feld Hell no! Fantastic features, no doubt. But you know what big companies do with your personal data. Well, imagine that everything you do, your plans, who you interact with, what you say, what you buy... In short, your whole life is inside a centralized and closed service, owned by a single hand.I see good intentions, laudable objectives, but bad results guaranteed for society.

@thatguyoverthere @cambridgeport90 @feld @oklomsy there would be no friction if it was one app anyway because it be big enough that the government could privately threaten it for complete access, just like telecoms

       > Well, imagine that everything you do, your plans, who you interact with, what you say, what you buy... In short, your whole life is inside a centralized and closed service, owned by a single hand.it's called a Data Broker and they already have all this because they buy it from everyone and compile it into a single database. It would reduce the amount of companies to audit, technically. If we ever had the balls to enact privacy laws.

@feld Good point but the solution to a potential problem (the one I point out in the last toot) is not necessary if the problem does not exist. Even in the case that this is not avoidable, I would bet on alternatives or even what I do today: training and knowledge in the field of privacy and use of your personal data. And it all starts with what you do yourself: avoid using services that do not respect your privacy (or have the means not to) and/or are obscure when it comes to explaining (...)

       > training and knowledge in the field of privacy and use of your personal data.how are you going to scale that up to train all 300 million Americans? because a solution that is only available to privileged people with the time and skills is not going to work.

@feld Well, I would first start by trying to prevent such services from existing. It is difficult in a country like the USA, but easier to cut in other states. If it were not possible, we would be in a similar (but worse) scenario than the current one, in which only a few "crazy guys" advocate it. Yes, it doesn't look good, but the lucky thing is that those guys we initially used their own platforms against them before jumping to alternatives. An example of this? Look where we are talking now.

@thatguyoverthere @feld @oklomsy I wish that were true; even with communications in general, I prefer encrypted to unencrypted. I used to believe in the "I have nothing to hide" argument, but then when I looked at it further, the information doesn't matter as much as the fact that no one needs to have unnecessary eyes on it where not needed.

@thatguyoverthere @feld @oklomsy I think that as long as we have free well as humans, there will always be a reason for it. It sucks, but it's true. then again, I have never truly analyzed it on a psychological or philosophical level.
