This is probably a dumb thing/expectation, but I do wonder if there's a way I can hide all read toots (so I don't have to remember where I'm up to each time I re-open the app). I muuuuuch prefer a super-clean interface.

@sidawson It's a perfectly reasonable request. The short answer is no. The longer answer is maybe, kind of, depending on what app you use. I use Pinafore (web app) on desktop and FediLab on Android. Both remember where I was in all timelines when I closed the app (usually). They also have tabs in the notification interface that display mentions separately from all the other notifications (favourites, boosts, new follows etc). This makes responding to replies a bit less overwhelming.

@sidawsonWhen it comes to your home timeline, carefully curating who you follow can help to keep it manageable. But mine quickly became a fast moving river and I learned to dip in and out without trying to drink it all. I wish there was a way to trigger an instance, to increase the view of the network from my instance, follow without necessarily following an account there myself. But I guess there's the option to follow and then immediately unfollow.

@strypey <nod> makes sense. I think, keeping better track of just the _notifications_ would be immensely beneficial. But hey, what would I know? I'm just a user.

@sidawsonAe, I guess limited notification interface is a missing stair that I've just got used to jumping over. One advantage of the 'verse over Titter is that you only need to convince one third-party app dev that implementing what you need would make their app cooler, instead of convincing a corporation it's a profitable use of staff time.

... trigger an instance *follow*. Poor exciting there on my part. Hopefully it still made sense.

@strypey Interestingly, on Twitter, I used lists a LOT, so I would _never_ miss posts by people I deeply cared about, or who I knew were struggling & needed support. I sense that I might be building myself a client in the near-ish future (as I did with Twitter), to help with such things. Hmm.

@sidawson That's a great idea! Let a thousand flowers bloom. Mastodon has lists and filters, but they are newish features that I haven't got around to learning how to use yet. Tips @swansinflight ?I recently learned you can subscribe to a Mastadon user by clicking on the bell icon on their profile page to see all their posts in your notifications (not sure if other fedi server software supports this).@nzlemming

@strypey <nod> true, that is a MUCH lower hurdle. And far, far less risky an environment to build against (since your entire operation can't be killed by a single random middle management decision).
