Yet another wave of wanting to leave the Fediverse.

I made arachnid.town to hopefully get more people who have my flavour of autism, but it's been a massive failure. I feel like I mesh well with nobody in the broader network. People talk to me through doors. The thing that's keeping me here is that I have nowhere else to go.I am in the hundreds of followers, but I get far less non-favourite/non-repost reactions than people with even like thirty followers. I get I'm an annoying retard but this whole adventure is starting to feel like a waste of time. When Bluesky rolls around I'll probably hop on board.

I think the problem with the Fediverse is that unless you had the privilege of establishing yourself on some other platform then nobody will come. Your success on starting an instance or networking with common people still depends on big tech companies.

@Arcana @w same. On fedi for years, but never had success having any circle on other platforms.

I think that's something where AT will destroy ActivityPub, discovering people. The experience of even seeing things on your timeline is a chore. I wonder how many people joined a small instance, saw nothing, and left. The kinds of people who complain about algorithms are the people who already have a network of some kind.

@Arcana Why did you join disqordia.space? Probably because there's a culture/community there you mesh well with. If you, say, want to run an instance for SGI nerds, how do you network that? That's more so what I'm talking about. SGI nerds would probably just jump to the biggest technology instance ran by someone who was an early adopter, or had some presence elsewhere (probably on Twitter) or find your instance but leave because their timeline is empty. In terms of people, sometimes you mesh well with most people on the network. I don't and probably never will. That's my problem, how am I supposed to find people who do? They do exist (a grand total of probably like two people so far) but it took an extremely long time to actually find them. Literally since 2018.Your mileage may vary, but I think this is one of the things that turns off a lot of people.

@sarvo I think it's fair to care. I'm not talking about upcooming (I refuse to hit the favourite button on anything), I'm talking about interacting with people. If I didn't want to interact with people I'd just have a blog.

@a1ba @Arcana @w Was moderately successful on other platforms as in enough for said platform to be mostly worth it but on fedi sometimes it feels like if I sneeze it will offend some random person because of how much more massive the social circle I got is.

@sergeantcat @Arcana I only bring up followers as a comparison of reach. I don't care if I'm popular, I just want to interact with people who I work well with. I'd be happy with five followers if those five followers were people I can mesh with well.

@w @sarvo Favoriting is a massive part of interaction on the fediverse. I use favorites as a way to signal to people "hey, you wrote something neat and I saw it". I think you're missing out if you don't favorite other people's posts.

@graycot @sarvo Replying and reposting are both more meaningful. As someone who makes posts, I like them much more, so where I would favourite a post I choose to reply or repost it instead.

@w @Arcana @sergeantcat I'm kinda scared about downright replying to people that look important like instance owners, 'cuz they have an air of authority and they seem to know what they're doing (while I'm a retard). Plus even when I see people with a cool vibe I don't understand all they're talking about.

@mer @Arcana @sergeantcat You can always browse their profile for posts that you can reply to, and respond to them to get your foot in the door. Chjara, for example, posts shit I am too stupid to understand but also shitposts, which I do understand. There's value you might not be seeing because we still don't have backfill yet at lain at lain dot com please fix.

@graycot @sarvo I think that from an objective standpoint it is. When you repost, you're saying "I am willing to use up space on my profile to share this post." When you reply, you're putting in effort to write something and maybe start a conversation. Favouriting a post is a zero effort button press that has little obvious meaning (some people use them as read receipts, some use it to say they like the post.)You don't need to write an essay or anything. A "LMAO" or a "This is awesome" suffices.

@mer @Arcana @w @sergeantcat Ahh, I want to reply to everything I see, all the time. I am inherently a "reply guy" I suppose. It's only through sheer force of will that I avoid it as often as I do. The culture around here seems to be pretty much the opposite but I like it anyway. I feel like maybe I will get better some day.

@mer @Arcana @sergeantcat @w I mean, instance admins, micro-celebrities, world leaders, maniacs, sex symbols, long-dead philosophers, inanimate objects, I don't give a damn, my instinct is to reply to you all and tell you exactly what I think for no particular reason other than that this microphone seems to be on. It has sometimes made people think I'm insane. They're probably right.

@zudlig @Arcana @mer @w I don’t mind replying to a lot and saying what’s on my mind here because it’s anonymous. There’s so much trash I don’t talk on my real name profile.
