@Sir_Boops @Gargron i wonder.. this won't work for followers who don't use mastodon or the current version of mastodon, right? since follow is recorded on both ends of the relation.. the followers' servers will have to be notified and accept the change..

@Gargron you'll still lose SOME followers because not every server on net supports this.

To jump on this old thread: How exactly does this migration work on the technical side?

I'm also aware that if you're going between platforms you can export your user list as a csv file and import on the other side. I did something similar when I migrated from friendica to pleroma.

Would this CSV download file also work when moving from Mastodon to Pleroma?

I'm not too familiar with Mastodon because when I was first looking up what to use it seemed sorta heavy for the roadside sign parts I run my sites off of, but I bet the option to export is in there somewhere. Pleroma can definitely import a csv file of your contacts if you can export it from mastodon.

@Gargron the migration worker still has several show-stopping bugs in the last release

Si quieren migrar a otro server, mastodon.la está disponible. Una instancia en español generalista ligeramente moderada.@Gargron

@Gargron The real issue is that there are not too many instances offered to people joining mastodon. Just a list of happy few. There are more than 3000+ instances that are invisible to newbies. If the few instances listed in joinmastodon can support 20K+ new users each day, then all good.If they cannot take it, you should consider adding more instances to the joinmastodon list offered to people.

For friends in Japan and especially on the instance of mstdn.jp @mstdn_jp. I feel sorry to hear the bad news. I would like to reference to Eugen @Gargron 's toot as an instruction to migrate your important Mastodon accounts. Eugen's post => https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/103393780267601137 More information on Docs.JoinMastodon.Org => https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/ ( If someone has already translated the migration instruction into Japanese, that would be much helpful. ) Take care! We stand solidarity with you.

@Gargron can you reuse the same handle on the new server?

@YurkshireLad @Gargron I did it earlier this year with the same username and it seems to not affect anything. It shouldn't break.

@Gargron one point seems to confuse new comers; Attempting to see profiles of users from other instances could lead to no posts although posts count show a number. What is the possibility mastodon instance would implement a sequence to fetch posts from remote instance, if it doesn't have any posts to show when the profile stats assert posts exist?

@mahmoudajawad @Gargron heh. I think this is more of a technical one, due to the decentralized nature of the network. I have a micro instance, and I'm happy I don't have to manage everybody's profile :) However, you should see a link to the user's profile, wherever it's hosted

@primalmotion I do understand the technical implication resulting in such behaviour. Only thing is, it is possible to make home instance request remote instance with more posts, should the stats report more posts are available. This doesn't necessarily means pulling those posts on spot to the local time-line queue but rather a one-time event.
