@swansinflightHopefully lots of the newbies stick around this time. I wonder if there's anything veterans can do to facilitate that?@drew

@strypey @drew probably no more than we do now. It's up to people to realise their dopamine addiction and build themselves a new community here.

@strypey @drew @swansinflight In the short term there’s lots of helping going on, which is great. After that though, I reckon it probably helps to be yourself and post what you’re interested in, so there are reasons to make connections and stick around after people have exhausted the topic of what Mastodon is and how it differs from the birdsite.

@isaacfreeman @strypey @drew @swansinflight as a newbie, the biggest barrier is still in understanding how it all works. Getting past the impression that the people doing well here are geeks (positive use of that term, and it's a big plus for the place that so many ppl can explain how it works). It's pretty technical, I know I didn't stick around when I first joined.

@weka @isaacfreeman @strypey @swansinflight I'm just gonna use the bits i know and slowly increase my knowledge and engagement. It's a bit scary being among so many strangers.

@weka In my experience the netiquette is that it's fine to follow. Some people curate their follow requests, and may decline to approve them. Some give conditions in their profile text, eg interact with me first before making a follow request. But I've yet to come across a suggestion that's it's poor form to click 'follow' without permission or a prior relationship. @drew

@weka One problems with decentralized system is there's no one, obvious place to go for info. Lots of people have written good WhatIs and HowTo posts for their own blogs. There's a few portals that try to gather helpful links in one place, like fediverse.party , joinfediverse.wiki , and socialhub.activitypub.rocks . But it's hard enough for veterans to keep track of all these diffuse and sometimes ephemeral resources, it must be crazy confusing for newbies.@isaacfreeman @drew @swansinflight

@strypey I'm understanding about 1/3 of the explanations people are kindly giving me (or posting generally). There's something very enticing about the nature of Mastodon, I haven't felt this excited about the internet in a very long time. I'm highly motivated to put the effort in to making work, I'm curious how this will work for others.@isaacfreeman @drew @swansinflight

@strypey I like that though, it also means people are free to explore it their own way rather then copy the current culture. It also tests the design, that the UX should be easy to understand and pick up even without how-tos and tips. I think mastodon does this pretty well currently.

@lightweight @weka @strypeyIMHO being exposed to this confusion and handling it can be exciting, and doubly satisfying when you get it. And the plus side is, if you have questions, someone on the fedi is likely to help out.@isaacfreeman @drew @swansinflight

@jens @weka @strypey most of us are overjoyed that this little slice of digital paradise we've carved out for ourselves is a bit livelier! I think quite a few of us are pretty proud to show newcomers what's here already. This is what *communities* can build. No ulterior motives. @isaacfreeman @drew @swansinflight

@shipp True, most people seem to be grokking the basics by themselves. But I do notice confusion about the difference between Local and Federated timelines, how to find people to follow (*especially* for those self-hosting or on new instances), how posting levels work (eg what's an "unlisted" post?), and why user IDs look more like email address rather than Titter handles. The lack of simple, canonical explanations for these basics can be a barrier to newbies getting comfy and sticking around.

@strypey @shipp I reckon people are finding the explanations that suit them best. One of the explanations for the success of Minecraft was that to even get it running used to be difficult, so people started making howto videos. Then that got easy, but it was still tricky to install mods. Then to write mods… all the howto videos built the community.

@Viveka> I reckon people are finding the explanations that suit them best.I hope so. There's certainly no shortage of veterans keen to welcome newbies and help them find any help resource needed. I'm intrigued by your potted history of MineCraft, sounds very similar to what I've observed in the Fedi community over the last 15 years or so. @shipp
