@andijah Islay is a lovely island. Any particular reason you are going in October?

@fitheach yes, it's one of the few months when we actually have time. No concerts in the calendar for me at the moment. I know weather can be an issue and we might have to stay longer than planned due to the ferries not running.

@andijah Ferries to Islay tend not to be a problem, even in October. You are more likely to get blustery, wet weather in October. If it is wet, there are lots of super distilleries to visit. π

@fitheach I know, we've been there for 3 days a while ago (and we actually had ferry issues, that's why we plan with extra time), and wet weather is okay. We're not the sun bathing types. ;-)

@yngmar Thanks! An interesting history, and probably an older vessel than I would've assumed:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalac_catamarans

@fitheach It's got one thing in common with that Catalac - it's very narrow for a catamaran. I guess that's a good feature if you're going through narrower canals.

@yngmar Well, I was thinking about that when I took the photo. It probably doesn't go through the canal. It will just ply up and down Loch Nis, where being narrow is a disadvantage. However, being a cataraman might be have an advantage. A viewing port between the two hulls, perhaps?

@fitheach Mostly ferries are catamaran designs to allow for faster passages while being more fuel efficient. Either that or they ride on foils.

@yngmar Might be something to do with energy efficiency or something to do with the sonar:https://www.cruiselochness.com/about-us#spiritI don't think any of the other sightseeing boats are cataramans. There used to be a cataraman that operated from Rosyth to Rotterdam, but, that was a rarity for Scottish ferries (and there are a lot of them).

@fitheach It's the speed, says right there she's cruising at 20 knots. There's three ways to go that fast: Planing/foiling, which requires light weight difficult to achieve, displacing, which requires big engines and insane amounts of fuel use (that's pretty much all those private superyachts) or sleek twin hulls, which is sort of between the two, providing a good balance of carrying capacity with improved fuel efficiency. So newer ferries are often catamaran hulls.
