       When you join birdsite, nobody tells you how to behave.  The Fedi kind of floods you with guidelines about what to do or not do.  We care about the experience, both yours and ours.  It takes some care on everyone's part to be considerate of each other, but we all get a better experience for it.Content Warnings, image descriptions, post privacy levels... it _will_ all feel natural eventually, and you'll appreciate others using those features too.#welcome #twittermigration

       @vernthepleb The Fediverse, of which the Mastodon software is a part and the most well known, alongside many other software platforms.  Short for "federation" which is what we call all these instances cooperating together.

       @CarlCravens What's funny is that Twitter may not tell you overt rules but can ban you in a heartbeat. Mastodon may put rules on blast but on Free Speech Extremist I can pretty much do as I please regardless. Block me, mute me, but that is the extent of it.

       @CarlCravens Well, then also tell the newbies from Twitter why they cannot connect with their pals on other instances, because instances love to block each other or otherwise restrict traffic and exchange between users due to "values". The fediverse is as awful as Twitter, and mostly far more complicated than Twitter, so perhaps better stop the self-congratulatory tone.

       @PublicLewdness Yep, and we can block you freely. Many of my follows are in instances that have blocked your instance entirely.  You can say whatever you want, but eventually you're saying it in a vacuum and nobody is listening.

       @vernthepleb I'm not sure what you mean.  A federation is "an organization or group within which smaller divisions have some degree of internal autonomy" which is exactly what the Fediverse is... a bunch of instances that interoperate, but all run under their own rules.  (Which is basically what email is.)Fediverse is shorthand for "federation of servers based on the activitypub protocols", and I'll grant my use of "Fedi" was rather unclear to new people and a mistake on my part.

       @CarlCravens Apologies the remark about it sounding vague was more towards the whole concept rather than your explanation. I see what you mean clearly now thank you for ellaborating. I do however feel it seems like a similar concept to whatever the Metaverse is suppose to be and I distinctly dislike that so I might've projected a tad.

       @CarlCravens People should be blocking and muting whoever they want. That's how it should be. As far as instances go that shows me a sign of an instance of weak minded people who themselves are in their own vacuum if they're deciding for their users who they will or won't see content from. Then again maybe people want that sort of nanny state in which case that's their freedom to sign up to those instances. I like my "hellscape" free for all personally.

       @CarlCravens The one issue with the #Fediverse is you need to be careful where you register, many instances have extremist admins who partake in the belief they must control words and thoughts to save the world or something. I got banned from like a dozen of them for the stupidest of things... if I remember correctly, even xyz couldn't take my political incorrectness. Once you find one ran by someone like minded, it's finally the real #internet as it was meant to be from the beginning.
