@aslmx Federated networks need nomadic identity / account migration. Otherwise they are not much better than centralised services on that front.

@Hyolobrika @aslmx Nomadic identity is a nice feature to have, but not an essential one. Account migration is more important and AFAIK even required by GDPR.Resilience is pretty good in federated networks, as long as not everyone is on the same server. Outages affect some people, but not everyone.Also, people can easily have multiple accounts. E.g. I have three #Jabber / #XMPP accounts: 1. work, 2. volunteer project, 3. private. They are in three different DCs.

@stubenhocker @aslmx That's cool, but I would prefer to not use a service that can see all my data/passwords.And it would be even better if users were just identified by a public key from the very beginning. Less hassle and possibility of your existing provider going under and losing or banning you and deleting all your data before you get a chance to download it (that has happened to me multiple times before on fedi).

@Hyolobrika Afaik that tool is implemented in Javascript and runs directly in your Browser. Sure that requires a certain level of trust.The privacy statement says> This application connects directly to your account and does not store or share your credentials or data with any third party.I believe this is the work of @mattj if i remember correctly? @stubenhocker

@Hyolobrika The good thing is, it is relatively easy and cheap to selfhost xmpp and provide your own identities (i.e. JID with a domain under your control). Selfhosting matrix seems a bit more complicated to me (haven't figured that out yet). Sure, you're grandma/pa won't want to host their XMPP server. But it is enough if small communities that trust each other share a server, which is really not hat hard, since Snikket facilitates exactly this use case.

@bill Thanks. I might send that to friends. I'm good XMPP wise, happily running a prosody at home (and one in the cloud for testing) for I think 7 years now :-) - But I also did a live demo/presentation of snikket at work once, showing people how cheap and easy it would be to register a domain and spin up a Hetzner VPS.But I definitely would like to try out if matrix selfhosting is possible, too...@Hyolobrika @snikket_im

@bill @aslmx @snikket_im You might want to use more lightweight servers if you're using a free tier (?), like Dendrite for Matrix (not sure how stable/ready this is yet) and Pleroma, Hometown, Honk (single user), Epicyon for Fedi.
