Some more tips for our new #NZTwits (and other fedi friends, of course!). "Enable enhanced web interface" in your settings will give you a spiffy column view that makes everything much more readable, IMHO. I also use Tusky for Android on my phone. When you have time, throw up a profile pic & chuck a few words in your bio to help people make connections with you: folks are more inclined to interact/follow if they know you're a real person & not spam/a bot 👍

@explorergrace Strange thing is I havenʼt been able to get the enhanced interface for months, at least not without reloading. Have you encountered this bug?

@explorergrace I wrote to the admin on my instance, and was ignored. Oh well, itʼs very typical of websites for me to get a version that functions entirely differently to everyone elseʼs. Vox, Facebook, Google Plus, the list goes on.

If you are so inclined, you can do an #introduction post and pin it to your profile. You can pin multiple posts, link to your other hangouts, and feature hashtags to help you find your people. You can follow people from outside your "home" instance, but you can also migrate instances if the home instance you joined doesn't feel like the right fit.

@explorergrace I was heavily censored there. Communist China has nothing on Google! There were also some weird things to do with Circles that didnʼt match their documentation.

Not all instances are the same. Some are moderated more than others, some federate with anyone and everyone (that'll make sense when you get the hang of the lingo), some are really focused on a thing (ie tech), others on community.Don't be afraid to get stuck in and explore and to move if you've found yourself in the wrong spot.

@nzlemming Bingʼs pretty much dead with the index having collapsed to one smaller than Inktomiʼs in the 2000s. And DDG, Yahoo, Ecosia and all the Bing proxies are not saying a thing, which I find weird. If you go through Bingʼs results for a site search, c. 40 per cent are repeated page after page. https://jackyan.com/blog/2022/09/testing-the-search-engines-bing-likes-antiquity-most-favour-html-over-php/Gone to @Mojeek, infinitely better. Biggest western index outside of Google.

FAQ: Yes, they really are called "toots". Yes, we all still LOL at that.Yes, DMs look VERY similar to ordinary toots. Yes, I still check the @ symbol (which denotes a DM) is there every time!If you want to hide something behind a content warning (we tend to err on the side of kindness here), just select the CW button before posting. Done! People can expand it with one click, and those who want to can just scroll on by. It makes it a much more pleasant experience for all.

Alt text is appreciated and can easily be added to images. You can also follow @alt_text to get an auto DM any time you forget. You can edit your toots! That's what "Delete and re-draft" is for! :partyparrot: Capitalising the first letter in each word in hashtags makes it easier for screen readers #AccessibilityMattersNo, there isn't an alorithm to push content and engagement. Often we find that engagement is actually higher, despite there being less people here 🤷‍♀️

If you see reference to "the birdsite" that is what we tend to call Twitter.Instances can have their own custom emoji, which is how Masto NZ got the legendary laser kiwi! :laserkiwi: Finally (I'll shut up in a second, I swear), if you've joined Mastodon.nz we have an active and approachable mod team, as well as plenty of lovely people who will help you out if you're stuck. We've all been on the same learning curve at some point.OK, Imma sit down now! 😂

@nzlemming It seems to have got worse very recently (first half of 2022, say late May–early June), but even the Microsoft forum volunteers havenʼt been told anything. I began digging and that blog post was one of the many that I wrote.

@weka Well, you are already in it! 🙂 If there's someone you would like to invite to join the .nz crew, you can generate an invitation from your settings panel and then share that with the people you wish to. That'll bring them straight to Masto NZ when they sign up.There's also a few sites that list Mastodon servers so people can pick one from there if they'd rather join a different one if they prefer.

@weka All good 🙂 You can only belong to one instance per account (server/ instance are the same thing here). Your "local" timeline" is everyone in your home instance. You can follow people from different instances. People you're following will show up in the "Home" tab.If you want to change the instance you belong to, you can keep your current account & migrate between instances, or you could make a new account at a different instance if you prefer (or have 2).
