@stux still a very common form of employment in Britain for young people in skilled trades (electricians, mechanics etc), at one point the minimum wages were way lower and working conditions not so good (lots of bullying and being used as general dogsbody by older staff) which has led to a shortage of apprentices (this system also makes it difficult to change career later in life as apprenticeships combined with college courses are not as accessible to those older than their teens/20s)

@stux Is a 21 year old really more than 3 times more productive than a 15 year old?

@stux The US has different hourly minimum wages depending on if the position is tipped or not. If the worker is in a position where they receive tips, the minimum wage is $2.13/hr, otherwise (unless they've recently increased it) it's $7.50/hr. If the $2.13/hr plus tips is less than $7.50/hr, the employer is required to pay them the difference. Most states and certain cities/counties have laws that increase minimum wage further. Here it's $11/hour with $1 added each year through 2024

@stux I wonder why there is no uniform pay. Sounds to me it gives incentive to hire kids and get them out of school as cheap labour

A person in the US would have to earn $24.90 an hour just to afford rent in the US. cnn.com/2021/07/15/homes/rent-affordability-minimum-wage/index.html

@stux certainly no in the US, our minimum wage laws are blanket for all jobs and age levels. Often when an increase in the minimum wage is proposed the older crowd will try to say its only jobs that a young part time worker makes and not what a "real job pays", yet this never the case as many employers are in a race to the bottom in employee pay.

@gme @trebach @stux At 1st it seemed a bit off to expect the fed min wage to cover fed avg rent b/c it’d be overkill in the cheap areas. But then the article said “West Virginia has among the lowest housing wages”, and even there the $8.75 an hour min wage doesn’t clear the $12.12/hr bar that’s needed for WV rent. Fucked up indeed.

@stux It varies across Canada, but in my province of BC the minimum wage is €11.44 across the board, any age. Any occupation.https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/employment-standards-advice/employment-standards/wages/minimum-wage
