Someday, your favorite band, songs, or albums could just disappear from Spotify or Tidal or YouTube Music, or ALL the streaming platforms. Buy their music. Physical or DRM-free digital.

Bandcamp is one of the best places to find affordable DRM-free digital copies of a band's music. And when you guy physical, you also get immediate digital downloads. But if your favorites aren't there, the iTunes store is a surprisingly good alternative. Songs there are still DRM-free, and they're still 99 cents US.

@killyourfm Yes!And you can rip physical music to your computer, phone etc and still get the convenience of streaming without handing anyone control over your collection.Another problem with streaming is they sometimes substitute different versions of tracks without telling you. One day you'll play a song and the singer isn't the same, or the words aren't the same, or the recording isn't the same, and there's no explanation for htis.

@killyourfm Exactly this. Also nextcloud music work's well with everything Subsonic or Ampache compatible. But I guess it's the same problem that exists with Podcasts, these are independent and use apps that are not a silo, but people don't really get how this works in the first place. Also there's the problem of sharing music publicly, which can get people sued. :(https://github.com/owncloud/music#readme

@killyourfm @alsternerd The Music app on NextCloud is excellent! I did an article about it here:https://growyourown.services/review-of-music-app-for-nextcloud/It basically lets you make your own personal streaming service, it works pretty much like Spotify etc but it's your own music and podcast collection on your own private server. You can even use RSS feeds so the latest podcasts get added to your server automatically.

@killyourfm thanks a lot for pointing it out. I'm only using Spotify since years. That music sometimes vanishes, it does not integrate with music from my previous offline collection and that my whole recent music collection depends on services from a single company bothers me.I never really considered Bandcamp, assuming wrongly that it does sell most of the artists I'm listening too.

Nextcloud's music app lets you store all your music on your nextcloud and stream it using an ampache or subsonic compatible android or ios app.Lately on android I've been using the Ultrasonic app because it looks reasonably modern and it supports the podcasts feature of nextcloud music as well so it can pull double duty.

@killyourfm Fuck yes. I woke up to this realization a couple years ago and started building my album collection. I realized I had payed for streaming services for 12 years, did some quick math to figure out how much that had cost me and I had NOTHING to show for it. NOTHING AT ALL. Not only that, as you say, the songs on streaming services could disappear tomorrow and you have nothing you can do about that.

@stemid And adding fuel to the fire is the fact that it's already happening -- all the time -- with movies and video games. You're right about not having anything to show for it. We FEEL like we pay so little on a monthly basis, but... That "all you can eat" mentality is ruining everything.

@killyourfm I started a collection during the pandemic again. It can get expensive, just like the old days, but with platforms like Bandcamp it's always a purchase that feels good. And if you're on a budget, just follow the artist, and they'll message you if they put their music on sale. There are ways to make it work if you want to. It's also fun to think intentionally about music again. And when you don't want to, radio still exists.

@killyourfm that disappearing is also caused by the fact that Spotify is not the only streaming player. There's also Deezer, YT music (my choice - surely NOT better than Spotify), apple music, Amazon music, Tidal etc As a musician I won't miss out on any of those, so I use (as lots of others) a service like Distrokid which manages the subscription of my music to all those streaming services at once. However that involves fees. For every year. If I cannot afford those: All albums of mine vanish.

@killyourfm I used Spotify exclusively for years, then one day one song in my playlist just disappeared. It was a Bassnectar cover of an Ellie Goulding song and there must have been some dispute between labels. That pushed me to close my Spotify account shortly later and move to Bandcamp. @killyourfm remember when MySpace lost TWELVE YEARS of data?I get the impression that Blade Runner 2049 was making reference to data outages too.Funny, when the original film was released more people were concerned about EMPs from nuclear wars than they were concerned about massive data loss and outages given how floppies were around 160KiB and even 10MiB hard drives were prohibitively expensive.Meanwhile networked computing barely existed outside of military and academia.
