I've recently been interested in visual writing prompts, seems they're getting popular in here. The issue is that they're often generated using Midjourney, one of those pesky AI engines that were created by sucking art from unaware or unconsenting artists.Everytime you use AI Art, no matter how pure your purpose is, you're normalizing the privatization of art that people like you or me did, to crunch it and resell it on behalf of megacorporations.https://www.polygon.com/23558946/ai-art-lawsuit-stability-stable-diffusion-deviantart-midjourneyFor that reason I'm muting these posts from now on. Every time I want to participate, I think of all artists who are now unemployed because "using an AI is cheaper". I cannot in good conscience endorse the usage of any tool that was created using automated plagiarism.#Midjourney #VisualArtPromptMeta #SayNoToAIArt #AIArtBoycott #AIArtIsPlagiarism

Messenger pigeons, except they're cybernetic! You program your pigeon with its destination. The receiver inserts the USB stick into the holo projector, and voila! This would be useful in areas with high surveillance - and would make things much more romantic. In a way, I think realtime access to the internet strips away a nice part of offline communication.Letters are gone, and who writes personal emails nowadays? It's all instant messages! Now let's think of the government surveillance idea. Imagine servers open and close by day, so you'd need to find your lovey dovey in the daily turmoil of chaotic temporary servers.(with the bonus of govt crack downs making private internet unavailable at crucial times - good plot device!)I might need to consider this... 🤔"The year is 2684. Government surveillance of the internet is law. But there are underground internet servers opening and closing in matter of hours. Here, in the under-nets, is where people can speak freely about civil matters... or engage in shady deals." 😎Damn. I am done with 25% of my novel, I can't afford another rewrite. Oh well :blobshrug: #Cyberpunk #amWriting

There are two clear antagonists in the story:The culprit, and Agent Williams (NBI).The culprit must remain unknown; revealing their identity or motivations would spoil the mystery of the whole book.As for agent Williams, I suspect he's supported by a tight network of complicit government officials. Otherwise he wouldn't have obtained any rank with power. But it's still too early in the novel to talk; he needs more details to flesh him out: How he achieved gis rank, how he began abusing his power, who he had to step over to obtain it, and so on.(And that concludes my Writing Wonders questions for May 2023, yay! :blobcheer: )#WritingWonders #PandoraDownloaded

I'll make this a thread with some wallpapers and pictures I've downloaded over time. I couldn't get the copyright info, sorry :blobfrown:A futuristic dark street in Tokyo with an elevated train on top of the car tunnels. Above, as far as the eye can see, buildings so tall they block the sky. In the foreground, a woman is buying a drink from a dispenser machine on the sidewalk.A residential complex in a futuristic city at evening. It's raining. There are neon signs in some buildings. A man is taking a smoke on his balcony despite the rain. A block bottom, to the right, the entrance of a strip club. A sky car is landing on a nearby rooftop in the next building.A cyborg girl with dreadlocks and thick glasses pulled comfortably above her hair is adjusting her gas mask in a dark tunnel. She's viewing a holographic window on one of the nearby control pannels, she's probably hacking her way to gain access to a nearby data center. The orange light of the holo window illuminates the long tunnel. Rather than anxiety, the picture exhudes calm and tranquility without other humans around.A dark street under the rain with futuristic slums full of metal and occasional neon signs in Chinese and other languages. A dark figure in the foreground (perhaps a cop?) calmly looks at you, perhaps confronting you (to ask for papers maybe?). Above you is another metal floor filled with cables and exposed infrastructure.#WritingWonders #PandoraDownloaded

I'd describe it as a cyberpunk mystery / crime drama. There's a crime mystery to solve, and there's drama. But at the same time , I don't want to go too formulaic. I have two plotlines intertwined: The mystery of who killed Catherine Emerson, and a deeper mystery that has to do with Pearson's past.I hope I can pull it off and make the reader feel satisfied.#WritingWonders #PandoraDownloaded

https://lemmy.world/post/209814?scrollToComments=true"Is this what the internet felt like?"I’ve been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?Followed by the following comments:When the world wide web was fresh? Absolutely, it was. That’s about how I remember it. Having your own webpage, running servers from your PC, dabbling in all kinds of new communication methods.Heck, friend of mine ran an email and shell account ISP from his bedroom for a number of years. You can also comment from self-hosted mastodon :D this is awesomeFolks, kids are rediscovering the freedom of the old internet. How ironic that this was caused by an internet corporation CEO getting greedy.#Reddit #RedditMigration

Welp, I got trollbaited by an account here but I don't want my post to go to waste, so here it is:People who aren't acquainted with tech politics tend to ignore the several nefarious things Facebook has done in the past, like selling private data to third parties, support attacks against LGBTI+ people, siding with Middle East governments doing genocide, and so on.The naivete stems from the belief that Facebook / Meta's end game is to create a product of the type "social network" and earn money from it.Experience has taught us that this is not the case with Facebook. Their end goal is most probably to create a propaganda / shilling machine providing their services to governments and corporations, using their social network as the front. Because that's what facebook ended up becoming in the long run.So far I haven't seen in the news that Zuck's heart grew ten times on Christmas and suddenly decided that giving money to little Tim was worth the hassle.Have you seen this questioning by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes to Mark Zuckerberg? If you haven't watched, please do, it's only three minutes of your time. This is the reason why we can't trust Facebook / Meta. Because Mark Zuckerberg simply CANNOT be trusted.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFQZFFq7sis

Oh hey, this is what the internet looked in 1993.https://youtu.be/4aIkMwUeL_Qhttps://youtu.be/XpZ5STahhPEAnd this is the internet as imagined in 1994: https://youtu.be/88l9tjkTBwQ(many of those things were overblown in that movie; pizza by internet? That was super fake back then; only very few people had modems in their house; this was definitely NOT a viable market for pizza delivery chains)Actual recordings of computers and the internet back in the 90s:https://youtu.be/mLrvXTiIryIAnd in the early 2000s we had Macromedia Flash™, later purchased by Adobe. This have birth to the first internet cartoons, e.g. Strong bad emails.https://homestarrunner.com/sbemailshttps://youtu.be/8KqF9G_DQlsThe first ones were, apart from the videos, clickable areas so you could unlock hidden animations after the video was ended.Other things that came from Flash were cheap internet games.Gameplay for "Nanaca crash":https://youtu.be/WkzmYj8mjUg(there were also cheap porn games, but I won't name them in here)The only use for the internet was multiplayer games like Doom and Quake, and to pirate anime, movies and games.https://youtu.be/KMZ4kkSVrBwThe early 00s were times of major change. technologies were born and died. So did websites, and that was the dotcom bubble burst.https://youtu.be/25_WjiZnvQk#TheInternet

The year was 1999. A gullible college student still without a clear objective in their life, and without even having explored their gender identity. At the time, like a good nerd, I was still discovering science fiction and fantasy, and cable TV Anime was in full force. There was this show, Saber Marionette J, which still had its quirks and started as a rather stereotypical harem with a guy and three beautiful android girls. But the character Lime was fascinating. Her innocence when discovering facts of life was moving (just watch the squirrel episode, I dare you not to cry, I double dare you!).Before I knew it I was hooked. At the same time, the sequel, Saber Marionette J to X, was also airing in the same channel. It happened that I watched both endings on the same day. 😭 I was crying so much!I kept watching the repeats. Every single episode. (For some reason I was much more interested in the girls' POV rather than the main protagonist - that should have been a big clue about myself 🤔🏳️‍⚧️ )I began looking for the manga. I began reading fan fiction. I got the soundtrack and all character songs. I was obsessed with these three girls and their relentless quest for happiness in a world that did not care about androids (maybe this is why I love android stories so much? 🤔 )Like the guys in the Nozaki-kun show who decided to pull a doujin all-nighter to to give "Tomoda" (a minor character) the ending he deserved, I decided one day that the marionette girls deserved a much better ending than what the anime and manga gave them. And so I opened my notepad and started writing. One short fanfiction became another fanfiction. And another, and another, and another. The critics were ruthless. "Your writing is too sloppy." "He said, she said, he said. Fix that." "Too, many, damned, commas." "You drag the beginning too much." "Fix your pacing, it sucks." "Get a thesaurus." "Watch your grammar!"As much as they hurt, I had no choice but to improve to please my readers; so I kept improving, rewriting and rewriting. But the critics were constant about one thing: The stories I wrote moved them. I was just so damn good at getting inside the characters and pour emotions all over the place. Then I began watching other shows, and started writing fanfics about them. I imagined I was writing anime episodes. I kept playing background music to fit the scenes I was writing. I was on a roll!Years passed and I gave up on fanfiction. I discovered something more interesting: Creative writing. I joined a reddit community called "Writing Prompts" where I would write a short story based on a prompt that "op" suggested. I wrote my stories and read other folks' stories. (One particular user, "Luna Lovewell", rose from nowhere and became the star of the community. I wonder what happened to her...)By year 2010, I started exploring the cyberpunk genre, and decided to write short stories located in a cyberpunk world. Sometimes I wrote them for the writing prompts, sometimes to satisfy my curiosity.Eventually I wrote an adult short story about a lesbian android girl (back to my roots) with amnesia, looking for love and a meaning in life. I loved her, her relationship with her master, and I started expanding on that universe. I wrote more characters' origin stories. I wrote a prequel. The world expanded and I wrote a prequel to the prequel. Before I knew it I had a fully fledged murder mystery involving a secret conspiracy, and lots of interesting characters. It was time to start my Magnum Opus.Unfortunately I was struck with an economic crisis, personal family problems and a DRM issue with the software I used to write (noooooo, my writing! 😭), so I got in a years-long hiatus. But now my situation is stable enough to resume my work. I also found a way to recover my lost work; the pieces are scattered and out of order, but the scene index is there and with a little effort I can recovera chapter in a couple of hours. During the rewrite of an early episode, something magic happened: Two characters that weren't supposed to interact suddenly began to talk, and they... they fell in love. Bethany, this girl that was a secondary character, began stealing the show and before I knew it she had taken the limelight away from my detective. Now I had to rewrite the entire thing because this new development is worth it. It's a long journey, but I won't give up until I finish my novel! 😤#WritingCommunity #amWriting #amWritingSF #WritingWonders #PandoraDownloaded
