Listening to the radio while doing some chores in the kitchen. News comes on and talks about the new Prime Minister, the financial state of the world and how many, many people are on the breadline which means things like pasta are tending upward.Then they mention that WhatsApp has gone down and Meta are yet to comment. I f**king hate that service like WA are held in the same regard as the state of our economy.Why is that even newsworthy? #DeleteFacebook

@kev Maybe it’s not mention worthy for you, but for non-tech people, students, WhatsApp is almost as important as email. I imagine if the major email protocol is suddenly failing, you could use some news coverage as well.

@kev Network effects have always irked me. Why isn't Signal what people think about when they thing about messaging apps? Why do I get blank stares when mentioning Mastodon, PeerTube, Mattermost or Matrix?I'm trying to be the change I wish to see but it feels like fighting the tides.

@kevIt could be that Meta is better managed than our economy at the moment and less prone to crashing. Therefore seems more newsworthy.

@kev How'd WhatsApp get so popular common in Europe? Here in the US, people like to use the default, whether it's iMessage or Google Messages.

@kev that's because so many people are stupid enough to use that crap WhatsApp.I'm in some European countries it's like the phone wouldn't work anymore. Everything runs over WhatsApp for the low-lifes...

@CyborgZeta sorry but that's because Europe is far ahead in communication. US still stuck on sms. So sad. But WA is still crap. There are much better options. So I guess people in Europe may be ahead in that, but still stupid.

@ryo While it's true that SMS is still widely used in the US, I feel I should point out that neither iMessage or Messages use SMS by default. 80-90% of people I interact with on a daily basis use iMessage on iPhones, which means they're not using SMS at all.Not unless they're messaging an Android user like me, that is.

@ryo Everyone had an age where they are poor and vulnerable, so please be more sympathetic. If you know an other messaging tool that is as free, low entry barrier, and group chat friendly as WhatsApp, I am all ears for the good news.

@RyuKurisu @ryo Thank you for the reply. I have not tried Signal or Session, but I know Element/Matrix has a (confusing) register process, which is not required for WhatsApp.In that regard, Telegram offers a seamless experience indeed. However, for how manipulative the company is these days, I doubt is it really any better than WhatsApp?

@loikein @RyuKurisu @ryo Signal is just as easy to use, uses the same encryption (because WA took it from Signal) and Signal is private and not owned by Meta. Win, win, win.
