Do you write tech tutorials? As educators you have a moral obligation not to perpetuate the harmful norms of the mainstream.Take this (otherwise excellent) tutorial on JavaScript internationalisation – https://phrase.com/blog/posts/step-step-guide-javascript-localization/ – one of the examples has you building an NFT price tracking application.Don’t do this.Don’t help normalise/legitimise Ponzi and pump-and-dump schemes. The same goes for privacy-invading practices, no matter how popular they may be (because the mainstream is a sewer).

@aral Yeah, in general I'd try to be careful with examples I use in tutorials: It's great to use examples relevant/fashionable right now, but I try to be careful not to normalize bad behaviors (like NFT Ponzi schemes) or stereotypes ("Gilda asks Jeff for computer help").

@uliwitness @aral There was an otherwise good web dev video series I tried to follow, but the dude kept using Harry Potter houses as examples. It was already a bit sus at the time, but Rowling still had a fig leaf of deniability.

@Kye @uliwitness And, regardless of the specifics, that’s an no-no. Don’t use some niche domain in your examples. Folks who don’t know the domain will have to learn two things at once.

@Kye @uliwitness (My biggest bugbear is sports references. I shouldn’t have to learn the rules of baseball to understand your programming tutorial.) :)
