I want to talk a little bit about #php and its popularity. It's because RedMonk released its quarterly programming language rankings last week: https://redmonk.com/sogrady/2022/10/20/language-rankings-6-22/A thread.#tw

Every quarter, RedMonk releases these rankings. And every quarter, #php is in the top 10.No, scratch that, the top FIVE. Usually number 4.#tw

And RedMonk NEVER discusses it. They only talk about the languages hashing it out in the top 3, or when other "popular" languages rise or fall lower down the list. It's part of how #php is relegated to "dead" or "uninteresting".#tw

And it's a huge disservice and slap in the face to the millions of developers and companies who actually use #php to power their careers and businesses. When languages like Go and Rust get talked about all the time... while #php continues to power ~80% of the web.#tw

#PHP is POPULAR.It is USED EVERYWHERE.It is certainly no longer a "toy" or "hobby" language.I know for a fact it powers banks, healthcare facilities, logistics companies, manufacturing, and more.#tw

I'd love it if the tech industry stopped treating #php as a pariah, and started paying attention to the fact that the language is hugely popular, widely used, and likely powering something critical in their stacks.#tw

Because it is. And it will continue to.Stop using your blinders, and saying #js is eating the server-side market. It just. Isn't.And with a first-class JIT, and Fibers support that will drive async... we have a shot at competing with Python on the ML front.#tw

You might use #php for your personal website, or have it powering microservices in your business.Regardless, the technology is the same. And it deserves far more attention than the "sexy" languages the tech press wants to promote. If you use #php, make some noise about it!#tw

@mwop I'm usually patching WordPress when I use PHP now. It's main issue I think is it's been around for since forever and is not new and shiny. It should be acknowledged however that it has a bad security reputation but it's probably because allows the programmer to do so much, including bad ideas.

@smallsees True.And.PHP was the first language to include libsodium by default.PHP has been consistently removing security-prone extensions, such as mhash and mcrypt. My point is that its security reputation largely stems from its past.

@mwop People can complain about it all they want, but for most stuff that people need to do, whipping it out in PHP is the fastest and most reliable method.
