I want to talk a little bit about #php and its popularity. It's because RedMonk released its quarterly programming language rankings last week: https://redmonk.com/sogrady/2022/10/20/language-rankings-6-22/A thread.#tw

Every quarter, RedMonk releases these rankings. And every quarter, #php is in the top 10.No, scratch that, the top FIVE. Usually number 4.#tw

And RedMonk NEVER discusses it. They only talk about the languages hashing it out in the top 3, or when other "popular" languages rise or fall lower down the list. It's part of how #php is relegated to "dead" or "uninteresting".#tw

And it's a huge disservice and slap in the face to the millions of developers and companies who actually use #php to power their careers and businesses. When languages like Go and Rust get talked about all the time... while #php continues to power ~80% of the web.#tw

#PHP is POPULAR.It is USED EVERYWHERE.It is certainly no longer a "toy" or "hobby" language.I know for a fact it powers banks, healthcare facilities, logistics companies, manufacturing, and more.#tw

I'd love it if the tech industry stopped treating #php as a pariah, and started paying attention to the fact that the language is hugely popular, widely used, and likely powering something critical in their stacks.#tw

Because it is. And it will continue to.Stop using your blinders, and saying #js is eating the server-side market. It just. Isn't.And with a first-class JIT, and Fibers support that will drive async... we have a shot at competing with Python on the ML front.#tw

You might use #php for your personal website, or have it powering microservices in your business.Regardless, the technology is the same. And it deserves far more attention than the "sexy" languages the tech press wants to promote. If you use #php, make some noise about it!#tw

@smallsees True.And.PHP was the first language to include libsodium by default.PHP has been consistently removing security-prone extensions, such as mhash and mcrypt. My point is that its security reputation largely stems from its past.

Oh, that was a new one.Got an email from PayPal about a suspicious payment request. I verified the email came from PayPal, but went into PayPal itself to check. Sure enough, suspicious request, and the note indicated it had been flagged, with a number to call.I called. And while I was on the call, went to the PayPal "Contact" link... and realized it was a different number. The attacker was using the INVOICE NOTE to phish for details.Hoping I didn't expose to much before I figured it out.

@ramsey So, a large company I won't name but which now owns a commercial OSS product that builds on top of Laminas libraries... each year asks us when we will support PHP.next, demanding we be ready by release. They're treating us as suppliers. And due to "legal issues", never even donate monetarily to the project. This year, they outsourced patches to help the migration... To a team with 0 history with us, creating patches that broke CI. So, more work for us in the end. It's untenable.

@ddr @ramsey It's not always so easy. The patches WERE toward a goal we already had (support for next PHP version). But the outsourced devs were largely unresponsive, and in some cases shared an account, which made communication difficult. In many cases, we ended up closing the request and authoring new ones. But reviewing meant we lost time we could have spent elsewhere. That's another issue with the "supply chain" mentality - while we can ignore requests, we still spend time evaluating.

@ramsey we... just let it accumulate. 3 or 4 times a year we dust, typically when having company. My parents used to have me dust weekly. It always felt so pointless. Letting it accumulate means you get a feeling of accomplishment when you DO do it - you can see the difference.Though there's also feelings of self-loathing and disgust. But those are usually fleeting.

@grmpyprogrammer You know what else sucks about it?All the different OSS projects that have automation setup to tweet releases out. Those are all going to break, and likely nobody will want to pay for this.As far as I'm concerned, birdsite is completely unviable for OSS communications any longer./cc @ocramius

@ieatkillerbees I studied AI briefly in college 30 years ago, and have been watching all the hype around "AI" lately with amusement. It's exactly what you say - just fancy lookup tables and decision trees. Sometimes it puts fun things together, but it's accidental.(The reason I left CS was because I got interested in what it means to be human... due to studying AI. Debates about ethically turning off an AI felt ... Hugely premature. There's no being with a sense of self to turn off...)

@brunty Ubuntu. It's basically Just Worked on any laptop I've had since 2005. I remove all but the system snaps, add flatpak, and don't use most of the default gnome-shell extensions (I don't use the dock or desktop icons). I also use X instead of Wayland, as I've had a ton of issues with different GUI apps.
