@Mek101 @lerk If Edge does actually save battery (and it probably will because both Chromium-based and has Windows system integration), they aren't lying. I don't see an issue.

@lerk I know I've read some independent reviews that proved Edge did save the most battery out of the big competitors. I know it usually suspends tabs as soon as you leave them, so they don't use up CPU cycles.

@inference @lerk @Mek101 It's not even an issue of system integration. Edge just suspends tabs when not in use.

@doctormo @lerk @Mek101 If it works, it works. Your opinion doesn't change that. You're using Windows, and Edge is built-in, and it works, and it suspends tabs, and these things really work.

@alyx but even if it was true, that annoying OS bombards me with mafia like dialogs where I have a "choice" that is either "Yes" or "(less) Yes"That edge dialog is just the tip of the iceberg, It also shows up while changing the standard browser or even searching bing in edge for "firefox" (A huge "ad" appears on top of the results page).

@lerk I wouldn't call it mafia, but yes it's annoying. But I also seem to remember Google advertising Chrome when using their search engine from a different browser. And then there's Apple... Point is, I think it's common practice for companies to advertise their own products within their own ecosystem. I doubt there's anything that can be done about it.

@lerk mafia software indeed. I've discovered that they had made "something" recently on Edge and although I'm using a custom "dns over https" service, the browser can *see* now what are my url requests and bans a torrent service I'm using. (I have it as my default browser at work. At home I use only Firefox)

@antones_mp I mean, yeah, it makes sense that a browser sees what you're doing if you're using it, but it shouldn't block torrents whether or not you're using it right then.

@DrewNaylor torrent servers are blocked by ISP's (here in Greece at least) so using a custom DNS in "DNS over HTTPS" settings in browsers was a workaround to that. Of course at home I'm using custom DNS settings directly in router configuration.A browser shouldn''t analyze and decide for you if a URL will be served or not, especially if the user explicitly set in its options not to operate as a "gatekeeper" against "bad URLs".

@antones_mp What I think I meant is that the browser still has to know what you're navigating to just to show the correct text and stuff, even if it doesn't have anti-malware blockers on, whether or not those blockers "accidentally" on purpose block torrents.

@DrewNaylor the browser only knows that you want to navigate to, lets say Google.com but can’t know which is its IP address. For that has to ask a DNS and using the answer the DNS gives back it connects you to the requested site. And that should be all. Browsers these days lets you define which DNS they should ask, but on latest versions of Edge Browser it seems it ignores your setting which also is in violation of privacy laws since it transfers user URL requests to their DNS’s

@DrewNaylor I’ve looked more carefully at the network traffic and it is the Edge’s browser the “problem”. It’s actually violating users privacy by sending the request to a “data collector”. See attached image of the address that was contacted by the browser right after I wrote the URL and hit Enter.

@lerk >macOS never bothers me with anything about using their products over someone else'sExcept the parts where you can't upgrade or fix iOS without using a Mac. Or how they'll blame you for not buying their cloud backup if the hardware they sold you fails miserably. Apple does it differently, but they still push their own products on you.

@alyx what?I had an iPhone 11 a while ago and it never required a mac. As far as I know you need iTunes on Windows for firmware restores but you also need the espressif flash software for your ESP32 so I don't really know that counts as "pushing your product on people".To the cloud stuff I only can say "No backup, no compassion", regardless of where you store your backups, of course they'll tell you to use iCloud because apple doesn't external hard drives.

@lerk And I know some of their newer devices can't be firmware restored except with the use of another Apple device. >"No backup, no compassion"The difference is Apple products are basically faulty by design. Go watch some Louis Rossmann. And Apple aren't selling iCloud as just another backup solution, they're selling it as the fix to their own faulty hardware. They won't even admit their products are bad. They'll say you "used it wrong" by not buying the iCloud, they'll refuse to repair your device and claim the data is lost. Even though it was proven time and time again that the faults they claim are unrepairable can be repaired just fine and the data can be restored, without needing iShit. So let's not Apple shill, and pretend Apple isn't the king of pushing their own products onto you. Should I add the earbuds that are handicapped for no good reason on Android? The countless number of times they have you buy dongles on top of dongles, or the meme that was the monitor stand or the Mac wheels?

@lerk I'd uninstall Edge if I could after seeing this underhanded dirtbaggery, but Microsoft ofc doesn't want you to have a choice.I'll probably end up forcibly removing the browsers files and replacing them with same-named txt files or somesuch.

@inference Firstoff, the 75% is bullshit. Which browser drains more battery depends highly on the use-case. So they have no point and the rest of the argumentation about them "letting you know" crumbles.Except that they say "up to" like a treacherous high-risk share seller. With that, the closing point: Do they do it the other way round, too? “Edge is draining your battery. … Firefox … up to 3000% more” — that has (cherry-picked) data: AssortedDOM on https://arewefastyet.com/win10/benchmarks/overview?numDays=7 @lerk @Mek101

@inference and yes, the 3000% are bullshit, too, but not more than their 75%. Question is: Do they recommend the more efficient software in any case with the available data, or they happen to only recommend replacing the competition with their own tool? @lerk @Mek101

@ArneBab @inference @lerk I remeber years ago that there was a legal case againt huawei because they advertaised their other products on their smartphones, and this was bad because of unfair competition

@Mek101 I remember Microsoft being threatened with forced break-up into different companies over anti-competitive practices like this — threats which resulted in them agreeing to actually offer a choice of browsers competing with IE. Since then rules against anti-competitive behavior have been less and less strictly enforced. A fool who evil thinks … we now live in a world where a Tesla Engineer can get live ssh access to your car. @inference @lerk

@neglesaks if you don't care about liceses you could try running Windows 10 LTSC, you can properly uninstall edge there (which will result in errors everytime a web view loads)
