Thinking about AI algos, and how they were first intentionally programmed to elevate costic, destructive, and addictive expression by Silicon Valley oligarchs to increase engagement. Then they were used by the Empire Security State to elevate Security State propaganda. And now mega corporations are following close behind. If we understand the nature of communication and information flow in the current world, its clear the greatest threat to free democracy is not free speech (as big tech, politicians, and intel spooks are now claiming), but centralized information control using AI for narrative shaping. This is the greatest threat to a free society now. This is the global arms race for control of what people say and what people think. Governments and corporations are seeking to take the greatest gift of freedom to the world in the last 500 years, which is instant global communication, and use it to control everyone. The free flow of information across the world is a direct threat to authoritarianism. A free internet is a direct threat to authoritarian government. And authoritarianism is fearfully rising to grab their power back. Because we are not going to get any help from government, which is seeking this control for themselves, we should be actively but loosely working together to find the best ways to fight this, or at the very least get out from under its influence. And it would seem to me, the best way to fight this is to exit and replace the centralized systems which are controlled by narrative shaping AI. Which means all big tech. Personally, I am going to start researching how Chinese dissidents communicate with each other. If anyone would know how to avoid bigtech censorship, it would be them.

@atyh Is this a losing battle? Will corporate & state propaganda always dominate the latest, most engaging forms of media.Should we encourage people do make do with less? To eschew commercial VR/AR experiences and return to the fundamentals of live human interaction and the written/spoken word?Or is this a call to innovate, to skill-up and work collectively to create more engaging and more appealing content that promotes a better way forward?I acknowledge these aren't exactly mutually exclusive.

@gabriel For a period of time, I was a professional photographer. And for a long time, I only used open source imaging tools. This was more difficult at first. And I had to take all the tutorials which were made for proprietary software, extract the principles, and then figure out how to do that in open software. I didnt have to do this. But I chose to do it because I didnt want my career to be controlled by a few corporations. It was hard at first, and a voice in my head was always telling me I was missing out. But at some point, I realized that the look of my images was different because they were not created using the same software everyone else used. It started to be a significant benefit. Not to mention that I was not paying large amounts of money every year to Adobe. I was instead donating to GIMP, RawTherapee, and others. Eventually a few of my images went viral. This whole experience taught me a valuable lesson. Stick to your principles, be dilligent, and fuck FOMO. What you percieve as a restriction early on, will very likely turn out to be the thing which gives you an edge.

@gabriel And I would add, no amount of temporary tech fun is worth your freedom.

@atyh A real problem all over the intelligence community is faulty conclusions made from incomplete datasets. For example, bad assumptions made about some guy who had a bad day + vented.

@tpfaff100 that is a symptom. the foundation is corrupt. the actions of the bureaucracy come from a worldview that now exists to justify and expand itself. it is empire.

@atyhI've been using Darktable for casual use for a long time, it's painless and effortless, runs on everything, and I never had any issues like DRM wasting my time. Free software is even more important when it's something more useful than a game, yet people think DRM is acceptable when it's Adobe or Microsoft doing it… You can deduct donations in your professional expenses so why bother with proprietary bullshit that leeches off your livelihood.@gabriel

@atyh the biggest risk in part is how people are oblivious to the ai controlling THEIR behavior/interaction.my 1 cent@glidedon
