Progress has been made! Delivery in November. I was hoping for sooner, but November is better than never.

@oss It's kinda like an Amazon Echo, but made with mostly publicly available parts with the exception of a custom board and a fully open source software stack. You can literally run the whole thing offline if you want, or use their cloud based backend. The software is written in Python and can be easily added to with Skills to perform whatever task you want.

@mike I only would want 2 things from it: Work with smart devices and don't change things that are working. Ever!On my Amazon Echo every monthe something changed and won't work the way before or not at all.I can learn how to use my Sony Bravia TV functions every week.

@oss Yea, not to go into complete shill mode here (I am a fan though, so no promises) the software is currently available on GitHub (https://github.com/MycroftAI/mycroft-core), and I've had a lot of success just basically running it on anything I try. Even got it to work on my #PinePhone. It's also been integrated with the new KDE Plasma Bigscreen for the voice control aspects.https://nationworldnews.com/bigscreen-plasma-5-26-brings-the-linux-desktop-to-the-television/#:~:text=Most%20current%20and%20future%20apps%20can%20already%20be%20controlled%20through%20the%20open%2Dsource%20language%20assistant%20Mycroft%20AI%2C%20which%2C%20unlike%20Alexa%2C%20is%20fully%20decentralized%20and%20works%20locally%20as%20well.If you want to test it out, it runs on as little as a Pi3, though you can't really get the #Mimic3 with that.

@ryo Mycroft itself can integrate with pretty much anything you can code a connection with if you're in the mood to drop in some Python. Otherwise it ties into #HomeAssistant and can currently do the basics like lights and doors. It would be nice to get some better integration between the two. The connection to HA could potentially give you access to any number of devices all over the smart home market.

@mike I backed them in 2018 and assumed it wasn't going to happen around 2020.If they do deliver that would be a nice surprise, but I'm not getting my hopes up before I'm holding an actual device in my hands.

@tubul They're doing this odd thing right now where people who pre-order are getting priority over backers. They're going to be weaving backers in with the pre-orders gradually. I'm fairly confident the reason for that is they just can't afford to fill the backer orders without the pre-orders. I think they said they were doing 1000 units a month starting in September (which got pushed to October). Mine is supposed to be shipping in November, so they've got a few months worth of orders anyway.

@mike Yeah, I guess nobody is happy about it, bit I get the reasoning, and it's better than just going bankrupt. As backer I knew there was a considerable¹ chance of them not delivering, but nobody would place a regular order now if they had to get in line behind all backers.¹ It seems people crowdfunding their first hardware project have a tendency to massively underestimate the challenges going from prototype to mass-delivery.

@mike Sounds good. But to be honest, I really don't want to program that on myself. If it's support SonOff and Philips Hue, that would be enough. So HA sounds good. But the other thing is even more important: Don't change. While I'm as a tech nerd I live with cutting edge tech (wooh that sounds wrong), home appliances need to be consistent. I rely on them. Going to sleep, start my routine, it must work. Any day, every day. No change. Is Mycroft consistent by not changing all the time?

@tubul Yea, I get the reasoning too. I'm torn about it though. I still support the company, but they've done some things that I'm not a fan of. They HAD the money to get devices to the backers, but the device got delayed so much they had to use it for operational expenses. They SHOULD have known better since they crowdfunded their Mark 1 too, and this wasn't their first rodeo.

@ryo I'm not sure about your particular use case, but I'd say that it is consistent. That being said, for your use case, HA sounds like it would be more up your alley. Mycroft would be an interface to the HA, but the HA would be doing most if not all of the heavy lifting.

@verbumfeit I backed on Kickstarter, but I also pre-ordered another unit beyond my original backer unit. The email is because I pre-ordered not because I'm a backer. Backers are being sprinkled in with pre-orders. It sounds like you were in pretty early. I don't know what their schedule is with the backers, but I'd expect within a couple months of the initial shipping date (1st shipment just got bumped back to October).

@clacke Yea, there's a couple crowd sourced projects that I'm currently waiting on that are kind of making me a touch nervous at this point. https://pocket.popcorncomputer.comhttps://cutiepi.ioBoth are in the "Pre-Order" stage, and they've shipped some units to some people, but neither has updated their project in months and the forums for the CutiePi don't even seem to be working correctly. Honestly, not a good sign. I think I might have lost some money on those projects. Maybe.@verbumfeit

@RyuKurisu It's possible to train new wake words yourself with the Precise engine. I've never tried it. I considered it because my daughters really prefer the female voices. I was thinking of "Irene" after Irene Adler. I realize that Mycroft is named after "Mike" from The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, not Mycroft Holmes directly. I still feel like the connection is adequate. I'm not sure if Irene would be a good wake word or not. Haven't done the research.@mpjgregoire @giantspacesquid
