"More than half — 52 per cent — of immigrants have a positive view of the monarchy, while just 36 per cent of non-immigrant Canadians do. A similar trend holds for visible minorities: 47 per cent have a positive view of the monarchy, compared with 37 per cent of white Canadians."And yet the #monarchy is often presented as something with little meaning for new Canadians.https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/immigrants-people-of-colour-are-biggest-fans-of-the-monarchy-in-canada-poll#CanPol #cdnpoli #NationalPost

Prediction: Within the next two years, a divisive figure will join the #Fediverse , someone so notable and controversial that a schism will occur. On the one side will be instances who take the position that each user is free to follow or block the divisive figure; on the other side will be instances who defederate from any instance that does not defederate from the divisive figure's home instance.I do not desire this future, but I do not see how it can be avoided.#GreatFediverseSchism

@lain Oh, there are already divisive figures on the Fediverse, no question. But the current level of notability of such people is limited; most users are unaware of what their admins are up to in that regard.

@coin That's the sort of thing I have in mind, but most users were completely oblivious to his case. That will happen to someone more well-known than Mr. Gleason eventually.

@coin But imagine if users had known and had had an opinion on the matter? If admins had had to justify themselves to their users? If people had switched instances because they were unhappy with their admins? The case of Mr. Gleason was a precursor, but the real tempest has not yet arrived.

@jeremiah To be honest, I'm mostly interested in what this will do to the #TSLA stock price.

@jeremiah According to the article, BYD will sell more EVs in 2023. So yes, Tesla is in China, but it's not the most important player.

@jeremiah I don't think Tesla's going away. I do think a P/E ratio of over 50 is very high for a car manufacturer, even one with high margins and a high growth rate. Greater competition would tend to bring their valuation down.

@Sophistifunk @GettingCooked It's like Russian Roulette: if you keep playing the game, eventually something bad will happen. My only definite prediction is that #gold will go up in USD terms. By the way, the #RoyalCanadianMint has an ETF for gold in their vaults, backed by the Canadian government. Maybe worth considering.

@SAUNDERS @Sophistifunk @GettingCooked I take your point about the ETF, but bullion has its own challenges.

"France is rich because it gets the big things basically right. Housing supply there is freer: the overall geographic extent of Paris’s metropolitan area roughly tripled between 1945 and today, whereas London’s has grown only a few percent. Infrastructure is better: 29 French cities have trams, versus 11 here (likely one reason its second-tier cities are much more productive than Britain’s)."1/

"It has nearly 12,000km of motorways versus around 4,000km here – and French motorways tend to be smoother and better kept (and three quarters are tolled, making congestion much less of a problem). Childcare is cheaper: about half the price per month, in part because they require half the staff. Energy is more abundant, as shown above."2/Democracy is the solution to vetocracy - by Sam Bowmanhttps://www.sambowman.co/p/democracy-is-the-solution-to-vetocracyVia #MarginalRevolution #ukpol #polfr

@wjmaggos Do we have any idea why Mr. Trump has been holding classified documents? Carelessness, memorabilia, raw material for his memoirs, material to sell to the highest bidder?#uspol

@wjmaggos Well, I keep reading on Mastodon people who presume it's useful intel to sell to the enemies of the US, but that doesn't seem very likely, even for Mr. Trump. In my experience, bureaucracies like to declare everything classified or sensitive if they possibly can, so it could be the schedule for the White House tennis court for all I know. It would still be wrong to break the law of course, even if the actual documents are trivial.

@jcdenton @davidho I saw in the newspaper the other day a claim that, over the last few decades, the annual area of forest fires in Canada doesn't show any clear trend. I posted a quote from the article at:https://mamot.fr/@mpjgregoire/110520010181059629#ForestFires

@louisrcouture It is somewhat true that private schools cream off the above-average students, but that's less of a factor in the case of Ontario Catholic schools, or Québec English schools. Those are not private schools, they are an alternative public system. In any case, different students learn best with different approaches, so there is a real benefit to giving families choices.#SchoolChoice

@louisrcouture It's surprising the pro-choice speaker would take that position: aborting fetuses with Down Syndrome is common and popular. Perhaps they believe that is not eugenics.
