First cyber.space and now mastodon.technology. I hope this is not a new trend. I feel we need more small instances, not fewer. The burnout is real. Help your admins.Makes me appreciate the team running ours even more.

@Tay0@fosstodon.org While I agree that more smaller instances makes for a more stable fediverse (due burnout and such, as you've mentioned), it also makes it harder for the average user since you'll need more people with the capability to run an instance. With big instances you only need one person with that knowledge that can host thousands of people who don't have to bother and can just use the fedi easily (so low barrier of entry). With small instances, let's say 50 users for each, you need that many more people with knowledge and capacity (that is to say hosting the actual servers) to run one of them, so overall it feels like the barrier of entry gets higher. It's a bit of a dilemma, though I agree that big instances are an anti-pattern for decentralization as it is on the Fediverse (ironically saying this from the flagship Misskey instance..).

@Tay0 Whilst I think that it is easier to manage a small instance, e.g. for family and friends, or a university instance, this makes socialising harder.I get that we have the Federated feed, but checking the local feed is way easier. And until we add a method of viewing the local timeline of remote instances, it will remain easier to interact with others.

@comcloudway @Tay0 The new (not a release yet but in the repository) version of Mastodon allows public (without login) access to the local timeline, which you can see on mastodon.social right now. Though, as some have pointed out, such measures will inevitably increase moderation pressure for admins. (Also, instance admins can subscribe to relays to enlarge their federated timelines.)

@Tay0 Ultimately there is (and will continue to be) a conflict between "expanding the fediverse to the masses" and "keeping the fediverse culture (however it is defined) alive". Also see https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19300 where the latter believes the former will burden admins.

@Tay0@fosstodon.org I wouldn't call mastotech a small instance tbh - which was the actual issue

@tostCompared to the few huge instances, all the rest of them are small, including mastotech and Fosstodon.

@Tay0 @tost What you think is small could be very large for admins... You already pointed out the moderation aspects of it, and there's also the expectation of availability/speed/etc.
