@ParadeGrotesque reminds of a time when my colleague set up accounts every week with passwords and sent them to the secretary of new hires. Unfailingly, every single user called up as they couldn't log on. Reset the password and it worked.Turned out eventually he'd set the passwords to names of pizzas he liked from a local Italian place. The secretary had (of course) put them into a spreadsheet, and the stupid thing auto-capitalized the first letter. ๐#greybeardtales

@ParadeGrotesque Depends on the data type. A semicolon is quite likely in written text, possibly less likely in a password. I quite often use pipes or tabs. For special cases more esoteric characters, or more than one.

@ParadeGrotesque I would recommend adding ;:"'# so that it also breaks tools to manipulate passwords like password generators and such.

@fitheach @ParadeGrotesqueJust add '); DROP TABLE users;-- at the end of your password. This way you'll know soon enough whether or not the service you used is handling your data with care! ๐

@fitheach @ParadeGrotesque mine is from i format i created in 1993. the delimiter being the first byte of the string. that way the creator of the data can decide

@fitheach @ParadeGrotesque Not knowing and also not wanting to code for another way, every line can contain a different delimiter if the creator wants. So if you have embedded commas you can chose |\+-_ or any of slew of other characters for the delimiter. All rows can have the same delimiter. Up to the creator really.I've used this extensively on the mainframe for string replacements and also to programs that manipulate "spreadsheets"

@fitheach @ParadeGrotesque @alfajet The Swedish election system doesn't have hole-punching or checkmarks or anything* to make your vote. Instead you pick the preprinted paper from the party you want to vote for and put that in your ballot envelope. No ink blots to interpret, no hanging chads, etc, pretty simple.Or you can take a blank ballot and write in a party and candidate of your choice. A tiny fraction of the electorate will do this every year, and Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse are popular protest votes. It is too miniscule to affect the outcome, but it's a safety valve against censoring new political parties by spoiling or removing their papers.* Unless you want to override the party list's order of candidates, in which case you can put a checkmark in the box next to one candidate. If enough people do this above a threshold, that person will be first on the list rather than the party's first choice of candidate.

@fitheachI think what @clacke meant is the ability to write down a candidate's name if they aren't listed is the safety valve, as it makes more difficult to censor a party. @ParadeGrotesque

@fitheach @ParadeGrotesque I once had a SAGEM phone which exported its contact lists with semicolons as delimiters - I think this practice is fairly common in European countries where commas are used as the decimal separator..

@alfajet @fitheach @ParadeGrotesque Yes. Even if your party were registered, you might not have the budget or staffing to put ballot paper in every booth in the country and abroad, and even if you did some other party might be out to get you and actively throw your stuff away. With a write-in option your voters can always manage to get in a vote for you.If your party is not registered I hope a vote for you is still counted, but I don't actually know.

@clacke In the UK you have to stump-up ยฃ500, in advance. If you achieve a minimum of 5% of the votes you get this money returned. Otherwise, it is referred to as a "lost deposit". The term has entered the general vocabulary to mean someone who is a loser.@ParadeGrotesque @alfajet
