@strypey doing that on top of matrix seems a little yikes...

Keeping in mind that the Third Room preview is a very early prototype. My first attempt to try it out failed, because I tried it on a mobile browser. As it says on the front page of the website, those aren't supported yet. Second attempt failed as my Trisquel 9 system apparently doesn't support WebGL2. Maybe this Vista-era laptop doesnt have hardware acceleration, or maybe the free code graphics driver doesn't support it?#Trisquel #WebGL

@strypey They seem to equate an M1 MacBook Pro with a 'typical modern laptop', so Vista-era is probably way too old.

@kayeThere's been a few free code MMORPG game engines. I can't remember coming across anything that works in a decentralized way like this though. It seems sensible to build on top of a tested federation protocol, which can already handle concepts like persistent rooms independent of any one server.

@strypey I'm not sure how it's being used there but it seems strange to me to use it for a realtime game given how clunky matrix is

@lunch> how clunky matrix isNot sure what you mean. Are you talking about the UX of Element (or some other matrix client), the server performance of Synapse, or the functioning of the federation protocol itself?

@strypey like, all of it honestlyI still use it every day but there's so much more I wish it could be but struggles to due to legacy and architectural limitations

@strypey have they fixed the weirdness with the event format? the abstraction layers are not cleanly separated (because json everything) so there's leaky abstractions that get in the way of implementing the protocol efficiently, look at the effort the ruma people are having to go through

@ademalsasaLike a decentralized version of it, yes. Second Life was kind of the FB of virtual reality worlds.

Thanks for the link @alienghic . OpenSimulator could become part of Third Room by implementing the matrix-based federation standard that links Third Room servers into a decentralized network. Maybe they're already working on that?@ademalsasa #OpenSimulator #ThirdRoom

@strypey Wasn't OpenSimulator supposed to be something like this, for a hot second, back in the 2010s? Though being built on Matrix seems pretty big, if it works

@DrWhoZeeIndeed. Apparently one of the biggest problems for OpenSimulator is Empty World Syndrome. A new user experiences it as a set of unconnected ghost cities, huge virtual spaces with few if any other users in them. Hopefully the OS devs are looking into working with the Third Room folks, to bring it all together in a unified metaverse, based on open standards.@kaye
