Running a mailserver on the open Internet today is only for those who are highly dedicated, severely masochistic, or both.Seriously, if you’re thinking of doing it “because it sounds fun”, don’t. It’s not, except in the type 2 “whew, we survived” sense.

I agree, but I also enjoy it.

@tk I do too, but again, in a kind of “we made it another day” sort of manner.

@vmstan @tek I did it a decade back and stopped when I started job searching, just 'cuz I was paranoid that I'd lose important emails due to my server oopsies.

@suetanvil @vmstan I started in the late 90s, and even wrote some relatively popular how-to docs, but it’s something you can never, ever, set and forget. There’s always something new to deal with.

@tek does it become easier or harder the longer you run one? i set up my mailserver 6 months ago.. getting it running was a real PITA, but i've since been using it weekly (with a catchall address) with no spam or rejected messages yet. is that just some landmine waiting for me down the road?

@colin It’s always something. The setup you described isn’t *so* tough, but when you start using it as an outbound host, it gets tricky. If your rules are too strict, you reject valid email from crappy email software. If they’re too loose, ta-da, you’ve accidentally built a spam cannon other people can use! About once a month I get the surprise that hey, those email forwarding addresses I set up for family have stopped delivering to Gmail again.

@tek After running my own for over 25 years, I gave up. Deliverability for the small operator is a pain... do everything right and you still have problems. When my wife started a small business and self-hosted her sales platform, that was the last straw.

@tek I do it, and it does not sound "fun" the least. It is quite a learning experience, but it is by no means "fun". Satisfying? Maybe, if just for bragging rights. But "fun"? Maybe in a perverse way.
