I borrowed a movie DVD from the library today. Tried to watch it on three laptops with different OSes. All had their problems.

       1. Shiny, brand-new MacBook Pro w/ M1 chip: Can’t push sound to Bluetooth speaker. So I connected the speaker with a cable. The sound dropped out entirely whenever there was a quiet bit in the movie.(It has lots of quiet bits.)

       2. Lenovo X390 Yoga running Win10: incapable of playing DVDs without installing additional software.GTFO. Are you kidding me? DVDs have been around for decades, and your lame-ass excuse for an OS doesn’t know what to do with them?!

       3. Lenovo Thinkpad running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: VLC sees the DVD just fine, and shows the DVD‘s onboard menu.It can’t play the damn thing though, because it lacks some mysterious package - BUT IT‘S NOT TELLING ME! VLC just doesn’t play the movie. Some other player software tells me about the package, at which point I can’t be arsed to install it.

In sum:DVDs have been in common usage for a quarter of a century. And yet, we still can’t make them just work.Instead, the Apple App Store has dozens of fart-related apps. And of course we have smart contracts on the blockchain.Perhaps we’re just getting what we deserve./fin

@kgerloff Viewing DVD's unlicensed is still illegal in the USA and getting certified for a license for software to play a DVD requires the software to be proprietary and proprietary software is most often garbage.I don't have any issue playing DVD's on GNU/Linux once I've installed mpv+libdvdcss (typically not installed by default on distros, as distributing libdvdcss in the USA is illegal, although nobody has been yet charged for doing so). It's typically best to just download movies in the .mkv packaging format (somehow, as to how is up to the user), as those play just fine.

@lxo That’s what I would have thought if everything had worked well with the Mac.But it didn’t, which is why I’ve decided that it’s really computers as a whole that suck.

with the mac? why would a monopolist allow an out-of-the-box experience for something that competes with its own streaming services?
