Finally, by now I´m convinced that you haven´t seen a real nerd until you´ve seen rail nerds.People who, when faced with a train, start investigating the most minute details of wheelsets, couplings and buffers, muttering to themselves comparisons to a long list of things they´ve previously encountered, as well as the gaps to some engineering nirvana where every bit of steel shall be perfectly formed.#InnoTrans

General remark: In the rail world, progress moves slowly. Trains have a lifetime of 30-40 years; even longer for infrastructure. Modern features might add benefits, but rarely enough to justify junking a perfectly serviceable vehicle. (This also makes rail a great place to work if you like technical challenges without all the startup / blockchain bullshit. You have to be patient though.)

Fare systems are still a hot mess, especially in Germany. There´s no technical reason why you can´t buy a ticket for your whole journey that includes high-speed trains, local trains and buses / trams; it´s just that all those operators haven´t bothered to agree on making it possible. In Germany, the 9€ ticket has conclusively shown that there´s unmet demand for affordable, un-complicated public transport.#InnoTrans

@fedops @ParadeGrotesque Re AI, try „well, being an emerging technology, the risks are hard to assess“. Works at least in my shop, but then we have projects with a lifecycle of decades.

@ParadeGrotesque @fedops Go! It’s essentially stealing the beancounters’ power over the engineers, and using it for good!

When working with Python, is it strictly necessary that I do a fresh install of my OS at the start? Or is that just a recommended precaution?

@fedops While I’m not entirely serious, I do get a feeling that each Python install develops some peculiar little issues over time.Taken together, it gets to the point where instead of coding, I’m just debugging my setup.(But then I’m pretty inept, so I’m probably just doing it wrong, and my setup is totally fine.)

@khaosgrille Hah! I've had something similar happen with keyboards.I developed pain using normal keyboards. First I tried various ergonomical keyboards, with no improvement. Finally, I switched to decent mechanical keyboards, and have had no problems since.

"FOSS is really about convenience" - that´s a line of argument I haven´t seen often up to now, but it´s certainly true for me:https://www.theregister.com/2022/10/04/you_cannot_buy_software/

Look at the way we build software and systems that simply must not fail: Code for the Voyager space probes. Control systems for airplanes, trains and similar stuff. It’s slow, painstaking, expensive, and boring. But in the end, you get a piece of software that will exactly what it’s supposed to.Compare that to the haphazard way in which „smart contracts“ are slapped together. The two approaches couldn’t be more different.

I borrowed a movie DVD from the library today. Tried to watch it on three laptops with different OSes. All had their problems.

1. Shiny, brand-new MacBook Pro w/ M1 chip: Can’t push sound to Bluetooth speaker. So I connected the speaker with a cable. The sound dropped out entirely whenever there was a quiet bit in the movie.(It has lots of quiet bits.)

2. Lenovo X390 Yoga running Win10: incapable of playing DVDs without installing additional software.GTFO. Are you kidding me? DVDs have been around for decades, and your lame-ass excuse for an OS doesn’t know what to do with them?!

3. Lenovo Thinkpad running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: VLC sees the DVD just fine, and shows the DVD‘s onboard menu.It can’t play the damn thing though, because it lacks some mysterious package - BUT IT‘S NOT TELLING ME! VLC just doesn’t play the movie. Some other player software tells me about the package, at which point I can’t be arsed to install it.

In sum:DVDs have been in common usage for a quarter of a century. And yet, we still can’t make them just work.Instead, the Apple App Store has dozens of fart-related apps. And of course we have smart contracts on the blockchain.Perhaps we’re just getting what we deserve./fin

@lxo That’s what I would have thought if everything had worked well with the Mac.But it didn’t, which is why I’ve decided that it’s really computers as a whole that suck.
