The Evil List - can you eradicate every single one of these #bigtech companies from your life?https://slate.com/technology/2020/01/evil-list-tech-companies-dangerous-amazon-facebook-google-palantir.html#privacy #surveillance

@kzimmermann I'm clean aside from buying the odd thing off Amazon. I would add Intel and AMD to the list as they employ closed source black boxes on their CPUs. IBM also makes the Power9 CPUs which are some of the most open so they do some good.

@kzimmermannCurrently I am guilty of using one Microsoft service - LinkedIn :(Does it count if I visit sites connected in aby way with Cloudflare (hard to avoid in current web)?Except this I am clean for long time.

@madargon I guess lotsa people have this LinkedIn dependency indeed (surprisingly, I'm lucky enough to up to this day not be on that platform!)Cloudflare is indeed a way more serious issue. I had seen before a post where somebody (couldn't tell if jokingly or seriously) suggested that we removed CF's certificates from the OS's TLS stack so that any site covered by them would be flagged as untrusted by the browser. Nuclear move, indeed, but can't help but think it'd be hilarious!

@kzimmermannThere is some Firefox plugin for Cloudflare detection so I can see which site uses it in some ways. Didn't try removing their certificates yet.

@kzimmermann Isn't it some kind of fucking hypocrisy that the media who write about the "Evil List" are themselves pumped up with dozens of tracking scripts working for these evil companies ?

@kzimmermann If cherry-picking based on subjective bias is the name of the game, then any company can be "evil" according to that criteria.Either way, I'm just going to leave this here: https://builtwith.com/?https%3a%2f%2fslate.com

@paramdeo a comprehensive list of such evils would be too long to list indeed. But reading an article like this every now and then is a good refresher every now and then. Or more like a slap in the face like "wake up, you live in surveillance town!"

@miklo I see it more like an ironic reminder. Like, "wake up, you're being tracked even as you read this."
