On https://mastodon.social, /about takes you to /web/explore, and opening a post now adds /web/ at the beginning.On the left, it displays info about the instance, and on the right, the Mastodon logo is at the top and there's buttons to sign in and create accounts. Following up with my previous post about mastodon.technology, I forgot to mention that they will shut down on 2022-12-01, but become read-only on 2022-11-01. @logicalwillow With that being said, Mastodon was, and still is, trying to appeal to Twitter users, especially the new wave coming from Elon Musk. With this, it's easier for them to reply to posts since they're signed in, just like Twitter.

@james @kde @kdenlive There is a good reason for KDE to NOT deploy their own instance: they would have to maintain and moderate it. KDE sysadmins are unpaid volunteers and already have to tackle with an extremely complex framework of multiple services: the web infrastructure, wiki, GitLab, Matrix, identity, cloud services, build services, etc.As long as KDE can donate to a Mastodon instance that provides a reliable service, it helps the instance, and it relieves a burden of the sysadmins.

@gperson I just found out today (this might've been for a while though) that the #tenacity GitHub repository has been archived, and the last commit was three months before @tenacity has made their last post.https://github.com/tenacityteam/tenacityThat's disappointing. I've worked on Tenacity since day 1, and the project just died because few were interested in keeping it alive, and now the project has been archived without any notice. At least #Saucedacity exists!

You can accept patches over email, and push them to your own git repository. This is the workflow some people prefer.

I remember when #starnix had a 1-week rollback. I also remember when mathstew92, rootbsd (he was a mod before he moved to @nerdtronics) syscrash, ducky, TheChronicEnquirer, and possibly more were on this instance. I also remember when I was on DistroToot. Some of the old memories may be lost to time, but I’m proud to be a starnixian nonetheless.

As a modern update, #GitLab has quickly backtracked a few hours after the initial announcement, and they wouldn't be deleting inactive projects (for now). As mastodon.technology is shutting down, #Codeberg has moved to a new instance! The new account is @Codeberg, which is on social.anoxinon.de.Now mastodon.technology has a banner at the top saying the instance will become read-only on November 1st, and will shut down on December 1st. mastodon.technology's source code has also been archived, and the default branch has been set to `public` (yes that's the name of the branch), which was where the docs for the instance have been, which has been updated after the shutdown to include the old code of conduct as well as the list of blocked instances. Update: Now even user profile pages on #Mastodon don't display the old version. That means using ?min_id=1 doesn't work anymore. You are now limited to specialized Mastodon clients to collect older posts, or you can view my post below where I collected some of those posts:https://mstdn.starnix.network/@james/109192175423348143With this change, any URL that started with /web/ after the domain has now removed the /web/ prefix. Settings and other options have still remained the same.Now, user profile pages and posts are using their original URLs when logged out. However, remote follows and replies suggest copying the URL into the search bar of your instance, instead of a popout to enter your instance.P.S. It's official. Mastodon for Tech Folks (mastodon.technology) has officially shut down.The instance served us well.
