October is Blindness Awareness Month, AMA! Fun facts to start:93% of people with sight loss have some level of sight, even if it's just telling the difference between light and dark.Braille users are pretty rare (I've heard different percentages but all in single digits) so don't think slapping Braille on everything means you're done with accessibility. We tend to be very poor. 75% of working-age blind people in the UK don't have jobs. People think being blind means we can't do most things.

@ljwrites There's not a clear distinction. It differs both in terms of legal status and people's everyday usage. For example, in the UK you can be registered (there is a literal register) either sight impaired or severely sight impaired. And these sort of map on to the colloquial language "partially sighted" and "blind." But I'm registered severely sight impaired and yet call myself partially sighted much of the time since that gives people a better idea of what to expect from me.

@bright_helpings @mia_miau Not blind, but I'll try to answer this one."they figured it out" would mean that screen readers would read the shrug emoji as "Shrug Emoji" and not as "Macron, Backslash, Underline, Left Parenthesis, Katakana Letter Tu, Underline, Slash, Macron".From an IT perspective, this depends on the screen reader used, whether it has special rules defined for common ASCII Emojis. So, I would not count on it and use them only rarely, and especially not as part of a username.

@mia_miau Screenreaders do tend to read out the shortcodes/names of the emoji, yes. But that doesn't mean they're necessarily screenreader friendly. The real issue is, are they screenreader-user friendly. So a lot of them in a row is exhausting/confusing to listen to. And sighted people don't use them based on their names: e.g. the "tears of joy" is widely used in circumstances that aren't joyful. So using a lot of emojis isn't really best practice. @gunchleoc

@Yujiri I'm old-school and definitely prefer the style of the smilies that phpBB2 had. They were visually very clear. For example, it took me forever to find the Emoji version of the grinning devil, which was called "twisted evil". The Emoji is called "smiling face with horns" and it's lavender-colored. That's visual euphemism bollocks if you ask me.I tend to hover the mouse over Emojis in the hopes that they have a tooltip, so that I can make sense of them. @mia_miau @bright_helpings
