It's not the first thing that made me cry today but Nate Stevenson's new comic made me cry in that "oh shit here's me" kind of way.https://www.imfineimfine.com/p/nate"My name is NATE! and my pronouns are he/him! I've chosen a 'male' name and 'male' pronouns because this is how I want to interact with a world that demands we choose one of two."Later he says "I wanted a name that'd fit in with my siblings' names" too. Which, is complicated and emotional for me but very much part of how I chose my name.

Do sighted people (or people who otherwise don't feel that image descriptions are for them) look at image descriptions here?Generally I mean, not necessarily "always" or "never."

@feld I'm relieved to see on your profile that your posts are mostly satire, because if I couldn't believe that this one was satire, I'd worry that you'd reacted with such an inability to identify a personal value when you saw one expressed.I did laugh hard at this though, so thank you. I just never expected this particular reaction to my very ordinary statement.

@checkervest The moon is 400 times closer to the earth than the sun is. The sun is 400 times bigger than the moon. This is why they look the same size in the sky, which is what makes total solar eclipses possible. This isn't going to be the case on most planets, and it wasn't the case for all of earth's history either (because gravity, the distance between the earth and moon changes very slowly). We live on a charmed planet and in a charmed epoch where this is possible.

October is Blindness Awareness Month, AMA! Fun facts to start:93% of people with sight loss have some level of sight, even if it's just telling the difference between light and dark.Braille users are pretty rare (I've heard different percentages but all in single digits) so don't think slapping Braille on everything means you're done with accessibility. We tend to be very poor. 75% of working-age blind people in the UK don't have jobs. People think being blind means we can't do most things.

All day I've been wanting to get a photo of myself in the new rainbow dungarees and I forgot that to use the full-length mirror in my room I have to stand on my bed. So here's me doing that. :)

@mia_miau Screenreaders do tend to read out the shortcodes/names of the emoji, yes. But that doesn't mean they're necessarily screenreader friendly. The real issue is, are they screenreader-user friendly. So a lot of them in a row is exhausting/confusing to listen to. And sighted people don't use them based on their names: e.g. the "tears of joy" is widely used in circumstances that aren't joyful. So using a lot of emojis isn't really best practice. @gunchleoc

@lienrag It is not acceptable to not describe images of jokes. It excludes people. This is a general problem: Abled people don't expect disabled people to participate in jokes and memes and shitposts, but we do. We don't want to be excluded from fun stuff our friends/peers are doing. It doesn't ruin the joke to explain it; anyone who doesn't need/want to look at the description won't.But even if it did, people matter more than jokes. @guilevi

@feld Holy shit dude, I may be partially sighted but that's more than enough for me to see that you're fully an asshole.

Something else about light themes I don't think I've seen in so many words:I strongly suspect most apps these days are made for dark theme, in dark theme, by people who only like dark theme. The light theme sometimes doesn't work great, or it feels grudgingly implemented, half-assed.The dark themes you see probably are optimized by people who care about them but don't think that means the light ones are. They aren't necessarily ideal for people who need light themes; this is just all we get.

Having just been talking about poorly-designed light themes this morning, I'm delighted to see that @Tusky updated for me this evening and its (already perfectly good, I hasten to add that this isn't one of the grudging, bad ones I was talking about!) light theme looks even better now! Better contrast. :) Hurrah.

Dark mode is ubiquitous. It's the default on almost every program. And I can't see text on it at all, I struggle to do so even long enough to switch to light mode.I despair of the myths around its (objective, universal) superiority. And yet, for all my frustration with it, it's never occurred to me to hurl weird insults at all dark mode users as individuals.I'm not even mad, it's just very odd to see, at regular intervals, the vitriol leveled at everyone who uses light mode....why?

I'm so tired. At first I couldn't even read this text telling me that the app had been switched to dark mode (no shit) and how to stop it.The developers never consider that light theme could be a necessity, and it shows! It was especially infuriating to see, when I did summon the spoons to change it, that it'd been automatically set to dark theme just because I have my phone in battery saver mode. It's not quite a myth that dark themes save battery, but it's certainly not usually the case!

It says a lot when I see this and all I can think is "oh no, please don't be dark mode, please don't let this 'sleek new look' mean obligate dark mode, oh no it says 'easier on the eyes' helppp meeee..."

Heck yeah, kinky photos should have image descriptions too. Disabled people are often de-sexualized (it's part of infantalizing us), but a lot of us are goddam perverts. Help us out. ;)
