Friendly reminder that if you're like me (and the majority) and still use Chrome, the time to switch is nigh.- Learned today that software_reporter_tool.exe (which you can thankfully disable in chrome://settings/cleanup) scans literally every file on your computer on a regular basis and sends telemetry data to Google- In January 2023 they're breaking all Manifest V2 apps which means existing (good) adblockers like uBlock Origin will no longer function#TheresNoPlaceLikeChrome#BrowserWars

I've known about the Manifest V2/V3 thing for a while and have just kept my fingers crossed that it will end up where it won't really matter and things like uBlock Origin will just keep on trucking, but I found out about the software reporter tool BS today while going through our Carbon Black alerts. E-mailed my boss to ask if we could block it in Google Admin and sadly the answer is no, but it's straight spyware my dudes.

Like, this isn't acceptable when a random third party does it, and it shouldn't be when my WEB BROWSER company does it!!!Like, I get it Google, you want to know how many people use Firefox or Office or Creative Cloud plus have a best guess at what kind of work people do, but this isn't the way to do it! It's a BROWSER. Let it live as its prime directive. And give people their privacy.

@jebug29 It ought to be obvious that, no matter what information a company may want for its marketing purposes or whatever, it is NOT entitled to that information. "If you want it, pay for it!"

@publius @jebug29 Of course, they would argue that they are paying for it by offering a service that you don't have to fork over money for. Sadly, too many are willing to trade their data for a "free" service.

@AdvJosh @jebug29 It's a bad argument, because as an Internet company, they depend on your having a browser. If you don't have a browser, they don't have a business, so it's in their interest to make a browser and give it to you for free, no strings attached.

@jebug29 How do I disable it? chrome://settings/cleanup takes me to chrome://settings I used to be tech savvy, now I'm like a grandpa with a iPad.

       >software_reporter_tool.exeDo you have a source for that and is it in Chromium and Ungoogled Chromium as well?
