Many family members (over 10 of them) who haven't communicated with me in years are texting to make sure I'm ok. Yeah thanks. Maybe next time look at a map and see it will still be 10 hours or so before the strongest impacts I'll see get anywhere close to me. And you haven't talked to me in so long, what are you going to do from 1000+ miles away if I say no? Wait until it's over then ask if I made it through.

The power went out about an hour ago. There hasn't even been much action here so I'm not sure why, but our area tends to lose power a lot, even on nice chest days. The wind is picking up, and being in the dark with a storm outside is a primary activator of my anxiety, but so far there hasn't been anything really bad here.

I slept about 3 of the past 4 hours. but it is difficult with all the noise. I don't think it is as bad as it sounds inside the house. Sometimes skylights seem like a fantastic feature, but they are the worst when it is raining. I'm able to stream livecast of the news. They just said the band that is over me right now is the worst part of the storm currently. I can still hear some strong winds gusts, but much less than 4 hours ago. I hope that means the worst in the past.

It should start getting light in about 2 hours and my attitude will improve a lot once I can see more.News is saying rain should end by 11am, so about 6.5 hours to go.Power is still out, which was to be expected. Crews can't go out and work on anything until the weather clears.

As of the 5am update from NWS, Ian is officially a tropical storm. Here on the ground, the conditions haven't changed.

In the first glimmer of dawn I can see a little around the house and on the street. There are no downed trees nearby that I can see. There had been several food alerts issued for very closeby areas that never flood, so I was a little worried I might see rising water in the area, but everything seems fine on that aspect, but we do still have heavy rainfall.I hope once the rain lightens up my brain will calm down and I'll be able to sleep a little.

It's early afternoon. We're just getting occasional rain and wind gusts now. Other than taking the dogs to the yard, I haven't ventured out yet. There is one extremely minor bit of damage, but otherwise the house seems fine. I do hear someone running a chainsaw maybe 4 or 5 houses down the street, so I'm guessing there's been some fallen trees nearby.

@whami Whew. Glad things are looking okay. I've never been through a hurricane but I know how much stress just high winds can be with these trees. I do not envy your experience.

@CarlCravens Yeah. For once it's nice just to have to worry about when the power will be back instead of also dealing with a massive tree removal and cleanup operation.

@whami As someone who has dealt with a tree branch punching a hole in the roof in the middle of a huge rainstorm, I can relate this sense of relief.
