Black market prescription drugs and other medical equipment requiring a prescription sounds like a pretty noble crime right about now. Why is Oxygen only available if you have a prescription? Who approved that ban?

@psyklax My Dad used to buy it from the welding supply. There have to be a lot of oxygen concentrators on the secondary market now…Of course, you have to be careful with oxygen, or you'll burn your house down with you in it.

@publius @psyklax the medical grade Rx-only stuff has strict purity requirements. what you can get from the weld supply shop may contain trace gas concentrations above what is in the atmosphere, but generally sould be safe for limited medicinal use.i am not a pharmacist or doctor, though, just a chemical engineer, and my opinion does not constitute medical advice.

@black6 @psyklax I had concerns about purity myself. Of course, he wasn't inhaling it through a cannula ― he was using it to enrich the room air. That's a bit hazardous from the fire-protection perspective, but avoids some of the problems with direct inhalation.

@black6 @psyklax The "height climber" Zeppelin crews of the First World War were often incapacitated by hypoxia. They were supplied with compressed air, but apparently it was often contaminated with glycerin (used as a lubricant for the compressors), which induced nausea, leading them not to use it. Later on they were supplied with liquid oxygen, which did not have this problem.Or that's what I recall from my reading, although I doubt I've gone back to those books much in 20 years.

@publius @psyklax definitely a safety tradeoff there 😀 but an enriched atmosphere is definitely the way to go with welder's O2
