Earlier today I took a closer look at Yunohost:https://yunohost.org/I thought it was a container-based system, but it appears to work more like a Linux distro, but for web stuff and using Python as its underlying package management language. There's a lot to like here, especially since it handles a lot of the more boring infrastructure stuff. I haven't tried it yet though. What do you think about Yunohost?

@urusanI liked it enough to use it for my project site buildout. There are a few things I'm worried about. The continuous release model means there's a risk of breakage at any rebuild, which reduces repeatability. That means I'll have to rely on backups, rather than, say, my Ansible playbook (though I did use some playbooks).

@urusan I've been wanting to try it. Maybe I can finally have a proper #NextCloud instance, rather than just using #Syncthing everywhere (which is still fantastic),

@RL_Dane I actually ended up moving away from NextCloud, at least beyond using it to transfer files too big for other convenient methods and holding my family Joplin notes (since it provides reasonably secure user-based WebDAV).The biggest issue was that I couldn't get buy-in from my family, even when they needed the services NextCloud could provide. For me though, I dealt with reliability issues when I attempted to use it at scale. It wasn't able to cope with the entire family photo album.

@RL_Dane There were also difficulties in upgrading. I often found myself having to look up some arcane PHP command and run said command from inside the container I had it in to rescue it from maintenance mode after an upgrade didn't go smoothly.

@urusan Eek. That's the kind of thing I want to stay away from.

@urusanI've got Nextcloud installed and combined with Collabora (which is a LibreOffice port to browser/Nextcloud).But I haven't really used it for anything. My family is still using Discord and Google Drive.I'm running all this on a Digital Ocean VPS, so I don't know how well it'll hold up.🤞😒@RL_Dane

@TerryHancock @RL_Dane Although I had some maintenance headaches, I haven't had any security issues. I've been running a VPS hosted instance for several years now and even though I'm rarely on top of security upgrades, there's been no issues. This is handy too: https://scan.nextcloud.com/The (seemingly) good security is the main reason I haven't dropped NextCloud entirely. It's useful for running small-scale cloud applications outside the security of my home's perimeter.
