TIL: #GeoGebra, the open-source math plotting software, uses #Google #Analytics, even as a local desktop application. Upon launching, the first thing it does is trying to phone home, without asking the user for consent or providing any means to opt-out. I don't even think that's #GDPR compliant. Issues are closed on their GitHub repository, so they got an email from me. Let's see how this goes. I always liked the software a lot as an open-source teaching material, so I hope we can resolve this.

Excerpt from my email:[...] This is not okay. I don't even think that's #GDPR compliant. [...] So please, remove tracking from #GeoGebra. [...] This is unethical. Most of [your users] aren't even a legal age [...] If you really need tracking in GeoGebra (and I doubt you do) make it opt-in and don't use #Google but something self-hosted that doesn't track across apps and where the data stays with you and not with big companies. [...]I tried to keep it calm but firm, hope that worked out.

And as you can see, the only reason why I noticed this is because I launched it from terminal, which most users, including me, usually don't do, and because my #pihole blocked the #GoogleAnalytics request. Otherwise this would have gone completely unnoticed for me, as it probably does for most of their users.
