How long do you think it will take for science to develop a permanent cure for lactose intolerance?

@urusan Nobody will produce a cure as long as treatments remain profitable. :/

@urusan drop-off in lactase production is genetically determined and I believe hormonally regulated; you could attack it from either direction, I don't know which would be easier, but it's probably feasible

@urusan Probably something that won't cure the people partaking in the cure, but will cure one or two generations down the road via genetics.

@urusan is it even a disease? a good amount of the earth's population are naturally lactose intolerant. adult mammals aren't supposed to drink milk.

@urusanI still think it's weird that we frame a normal developmental gene as something to be "cured".

@thor I'm a transhumanist, so it's an interesting case study. It's disease-like enough to potentially get the medical system to work on it, while technically being elective. There's also a lot of demand for the treatment. Lots of people with lactose intolerance want to consume dairy, and taking lactase pills with dairy is a poor substitute.

@TerryHancock By using "cure" I was mostly trying to differentiate it from taking lactase to help control the symptoms. That said, I do think it makes sense to talk about "curing" an unwanted condition, even if it's natural (as long as it's the patient with the condition that doesn't want the condition).

@urusan Yeah, diseases are natural, too.Kind of like the whole plant vs. weed differentiation. So long as you don't want it, you yeet it.@TerryHancock

@urusan Yeah, I understand. It's just a weird circumstance of history, though.I seem to have become lactose intolerant in middle age, so I guess that's a thing.

@urusan I feel like we'll make more progress more quickly on plant-based milk and such, so that it's eventually not anymore relevant enough.Like, I'm already gladly eating my cereal and drinking my chocolate milk with oat milk. Someone on here said there's also already excellent vegan cream cheese.Obviously, there's still things like yoghurt and many recipes won't work the same without cow's milk, but you often only eat small amounts of those, so it might not cause problems yet.

@urusan in case you haven't seen it, this guy made genetically modified virus that made him basically lactose toleranthttps://youtu.be/aoczYXJeMY4I think he's working an improved version of this but I'm not sure what the status of that is
