       >Bernie Sanders (I-VT) blocked a Republican effort to require railroad employees and companies to accept recommendations of a nonpartisan panel in order to avoid a strikeOn the one hand fuck the gov requiring people to accept a bad deal.On the other hand a railway strike will fuck supply chains, inflation, economy even more.zerohedge.com/political/rail-shutdown-looms-large-even-congress-steps

@NathanK @Bro-Drillard I’m not 100% certain of my sources, but I’ve been watching this literal slow motion train wreck for months now, and for once the engineers and maybe some other unions appear to be in the right, with grievances worth applying maximal legal pressure to address. Except if they’re anything like the unions of old it won’t stay that way, the Achilles heel of railroads is how trivial they are to sabotage. The key concept except for BSNF is so called “precision scheduled railroading” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precision_railroading) which among other things has them on call for obscene and very uncertain periods of time. Their specific goal is to get some sick days and maybe the like, although it would be worth making sure they don’t already have the equilivent. Especially since that disagreement point doesn’t address the real problems, then again they can only do so much. Not only has this system resulted in 20K workers being laid off over the years, poor service for end users and trains way too long for existing infrastructure, it’s just so inhumane the system will likely shut itself down over time due to an inability to get workers (well, that depends on how bad the rest of the economy gets and other options for these sorts of people). The only specific thing I’ve heard about BSNF is a very recently made claim they aren’t proactively checking their tracks. On the other hand, they’ve got to be doing something where they have competition, although that could just be eating losses if there’s few enough routes with it.

@NathanK @Bro-Drillard Yeah, the crux of this seems to be a lack of leave

@NathanK @Bro-Drillard Good news on the US railways front:“Railroads And Unions Reach ‘Tentative Agreement’ To Avert Rail Strike”The major development is the railway companies caved on the sick leave issue, which as previously mentioned was the sticking point for the engineers and one other group/union.The rest is the usual mechanisms about how these deals play out, like a “cooling period” etc. etc.https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/railroads-and-unions-reach-tentative-agreement-avert-rail-strike

@Bro-Drillard @NathanK Should mention a couple of lowlights of the new system used by all but BSNF in terms of service to customers or lack thereof.Back in April in planing season CF Industries, the world’s largest producer of nitrogen fertilizer was told by Union Pacific (UP) it had to immediately decrease its use of private rail cars by 20%, UP was favoring the cars they owned. This was a serious blow to “Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and California” per a ZeroHedge article, and per another item from CF one of their biggest plants in the Midwest like Iowa or thereabouts was only served by UP.This was yet another input into farmers shifting from corn to soybeans, the latter fix nitrogen in the soil. alfalfa does as well. I assume pretty much every soybean seed available in the US was used this year.More recently we were credibly told one or more chicken industry customers got very close to having to kill and bury their flocks because they weren’t getting the feed they needed from the railroads that in theory served them. One can understand how the Interstate Commerce Commission was established in 1887, although that cure eventually became worse than the disease, and it along with the airline regulatory body were terminated with extreme prejudice by Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy etc. (!!!)California decivilizing shows the opposite side of this. LA’s got a Soros prosecutor who miraculously avoided a recall like his SF counterpart by having 200,000 ballots Officially fail their signature checks. Between him and the state’s soft on crime policies, the UP train police were for a long while unable to keep a dedicated corridor from being wall to wall discarded Amazon etc. boxes, pretty much only the tracks visible above them.Back to the deal: expect our railway system to continue to deteriorate and add to the supply side inflationary pressures which are the mirror to the demand side of printing infinity dollars, “Biden” is for example just getting around to lading out another trillion dollars from the “American Rescue Plan” which is Officially COVID relief. The Fed et. al. can only crush demand by causing a recession or depression, they can’t print fertilizer or feed.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @NathanK What's happening is on one hand the gov destroys supply (food, energy, etc) and on the other hand the fed destroys demand. It's the deconstruction of the economy from both ends.

@Bro-Drillard @NathanK Thing is, inflation is also extremely destructive. Talk to someone who lived through the 1970s (like me :-).The Fed is powerless about the trillions that have been and still are getting injected into the economy by the government (“fiscal policy”) and it’s in their remit to control inflation. They have no good options, only bad and worse. Demand destruction is probably better than destruction of the dollar (also see the government doing that as a tool to harm RUSSIA!!!) and catastrophes in the banking system if counterparty risk gets so bad money can’t move.We talk about “Weimar America.” Remember the wheelbarrows of cash trope, destitution of people on fixed incomes (OK, there’s inflation adjusting of lots of that today, but it can be outstripped), etc.
