@fosstodon @kev @mike I am having a weird issue with the emoji picker on Fosstodon. It's taking a long time to load. 🤔

@ProfessorCode Hm, that is painful. I haven't been able to replicate it on my side of things. I know that only the "Custom Emoji" come from Fosstodon. The rest are system based. If you're seeing slow load times, can you try a different browser to see if it's universal? Also, if you have another computer in the house or a different OS on the same computer, it might be interesting to see if it happens in those environments as well.@fosstodon @kev

@mike @fosstodon @kev I doubt it's an issue with my system. I didn't have this issue when I used another instance.

@mike @fosstodon @kev I doubt it's an issue with my system or my browser. It worked perfectly fine when I used another Mastodon instance.

@mike @fosstodon @kev This is a screencast of Librem Social's emoji picker. As you can see, it seems to work fine.

@ProfessorCode I'm looking into it, but this is what I'm seeing on my side of things from my 10 year old ThinkPad.(forgot to turn off the mic, so sorry about the audio)@fosstodon @kev

@mike @ProfessorCode @fosstodon I have the same problem on my Mac. Always just assumed it was a me thing. Could be because we have a lot of them.

@kev That's interesting. Do you have a Windows or Linux machine laying around that you could test it on? I know we do have a fair number, but this is the first time I've heard of this issue. I added a new one this morning, but I wouldn't expect that one would break the camel's back. Maybe we should explore categorizing them? Everything right now just shows up "Custom" and not broken down into more specific groupings.@ProfessorCode @fosstodon

@mike @kev @ProfessorCode @fosstodon The non-custom emoji are not using the system emojis. I am not being shown the macOS emojis, it looks like Windows? This is where the emoji are being loaded from: https://fosstodon.org/emoji/sheet_13.png

@mike @kev @ProfessorCode @fosstodon The file is 4MB in size and takes me 2508ms to load completely. If the png is no longer in the cache (if you clear your cache on browser close or reboot) then it will be the time that it takes to transfer the file to your computer that will be the performance delay.

@brandon Hm, I stand corrected on the system origin. That's good to know. Thanks Brandon. Regarding the rest, it's not the custom emoji that are taking a long time, it's the ones that would be in that 4MB file. He sent a video to show us what was going on.https://fosstodon.org/@ProfessorCode/108997805067059297The custom ones seem to load up fairly quickly, but the default bunch we still loading at the end of the 35 second video. I don't know how long it took to eventually get them all done.@kev @ProfessorCode @fosstodon

@mike It didn't finish loading even after one or two minutes before I eventually gave up and just closed the picker. 😬 I have to rely on knowing and typing the emoji name (like `:joy:`). @brandon @kev @fosstodon

@ProfessorCode @mike @kev @fosstodon My suspicion is that the file is being either requested multiple times because you have your cache completely disabled or *processed* multiple times because the way the CSS is written is making separate references to the same sheetBut I don't know enough about CSS spritesheets to figure out which, if either, it would be

@fosstodon @kev @mike I am happy to say that the issue with the emoji picker has been mostly resolved. It still takes a bit of time but it's much better than before. Thanks a lot, guys! 🤗
