Hey, I wrote a blog post?? It's just me rambling trying to figure out why I'm so garbage at writing blog posts. https://mikestone.me/20250421-garbage-at-email

@JoeRess I'm not an educator. My parents were both educators and my sisters and my brother are all educators, but it wasn't for me. I am a college student though, and from what I've seen from the college I'm attending, mostly they're just issuing threats. I've seen in the syllabus of multiple classes some statement similar to "We can tell if you use an LLM and we'll flunk you out of school if you use one." They can't, but they want you to believe they can.

@GreyLinux Right? Nothing kicks off a good round of Impostor syndrome faster than writing a blog post. In the back of my head, there's that nagging little voice asking if this will be the post where everybody figures out I'm actually just an idiot that doesn't know what he's talking about.

@pipes I love looking back on the screenshots I take. I've kept quite a few of them over the years. That one is one of my oldest though.

@lo__ You're asking for the removal of one of our moderation staff based on that moderators interactions with you and others on Reddit. Your descriptions of that behavior seems more than a little hyperbolic, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much "meeting half way" in your demands of us.Every action taken by our moderation staff is auditable, and they can all be reversed with the exception of post deletions. He's done that 23 times during his time 1/?@sotolf @adamsdesk @grueproof

@lo__ as a member of our moderation staff, 22 of those removals being for non-Fosstodon accounts. The last time he removed a post for ANY reason was in February of 2024. That account had also had moderation actions taken against it by 4 other members of our staff. Moderation actions that aren't of a cut and dry nature are subject for discussion by the team. No one is running rampant across the instance censoring content or people. 2/2@sotolf @adamsdesk @grueproof

This isn't an official statement or anything, just some insight into where I am right now. Sorry, it's much longer than it needs to be, but I got off on a tangent and I don't want to rewrite it.https://mikestone.me/2025-04-28-do-what-you-love

@Gina @KlavsKlavsen The generosity of the community is what keeps Fosstodon going. @kev and I couldn't have managed all these years without a community supporting us. Financially we've gotten enough donated to keep the lights on and occasionally donate some of our funds to an open source project chosen by the community, which is a practice I hope Gina continues as she assumes admin duties from us. We have our CDN donated by Fastly to protect us from attacks. We couldn't afford it otherwise.

Big NOPE here. "devices collect data to benefit users"No, any benefit to the user is a side effect. Those devices are for data harvesting. The real money from those services is made by selling that data. "Should you be worried about smart devices collecting personal data?"YES. BIG YES. Any benefit to end user can be gotten without collecting and storing your data. They could read/write a local file. They don't because that's not where the money is.https://www.androidpolice.com/smart-devices-collect-personal-info-worth-trade-off/

@strypey @pine64 Hm, I subscribed in FreshRSS and the audio feed seems to be working just fine. I also looked at it just in my browser and everything played fine. Could it be something with AntennaPod?

I posted this article yesterday, and I'm posting it again because #Grokipedia annoys me that much. The author has no doubt Grokipedia will fail, but I do. I guess it depends on how you define "failure". Wikipedia's other "competitors" had limited resources, and eventually disappeared. Grokipedia can suck perpetually and Musk will just keep funding it because he has cash to waste and he's a spiteful toddler. I have little doubt it'll be looked to for "truth" by some.https://www.404media.co/grokipedia-is-the-antithesis-of-everything-that-makes-wikipedia-good-useful-and-human/

Hm, I just flashed an #ESP32 to use as a Bluetooth range extender for my #HomeAssistant. Like magic, as soon as I turned it on 2 Govee Bluetooth Hygrometers showed up in my Home Assistant Integrations. Just one problem. I don't own any Govee Bluetooth Hygrometers. Just guessing here, but I'm thinking my neighbors might keep their house a little cooler than we keep ours.

@kev I understand the frustration with Firefox. I think everybody knows at this point I prefer Vivaldi as my main browser, but I do keep Firefox installed to. Honestly, I keep a ton of browsers installed. Vivaldi, Firefox, Zen, LibreWolf, Comet (for the time being), and of course Edge because I can't get rid of it. My 2nd (after Vivaldi) is LibreWolf, which I like due to its focus on privacy. Unfortunately, Mozilla just can't stop stepping on rakes long enough to give me any confidence in them.

Setup my first #Meshtastic device tonight. Super easy to get going. Hooked up a couple of antennas, flashed the firmware to the latest version and Shazam! we're in business. The only downside is I seem to be the only person around me that's tried it. It's usefulness is questionable at this point because of that.
