@linmob - Cool system. 🙂 Pine64 could combine a 21:9 ratio display with a keyboard for a slightly smaller mobile setup. The phone could be used as an apple-like external multipoint touchpad, but with the added bonus of the second display (and speaker too). With a longer usb-c cable the phone could even be used as a game controller with visual effects.

@whynothugo @thewk It's a HP Elite X3 Lap Dock, which was sold with some Windows Phone originally - it's just screen, keyboard, touchpad, the "computer" is the phone, here the PinePhone.

@scops In 2020 on ebay ;-) It works reasonably well (I have no similar products to compare it to) - with the PinePhone attached via a magnetic phone mount it tends to be a bit top heavy.

@dannycolin I've been saying this forever now. Start with the Pinebook Pro frame and alter it to use the Pinephone (Pro) as the trackpad and remove the internals, adside from the keyboard, screen, camera, etc. Add a battery inside and maybe a lower resolution screen.@linmob

@dannycolin there's an idea. Dock the phone into the larger screen (tablet) and have an attachable keyboard to become a laptop. Basically your phone becomes a PineTab and then a Pinebook when attaching the keyboard. @linmob

@jawsh @dannycolin ASUS had a product like that, I think it was called the PadFone. You would put your phone into a larger screen and then connect a keyboard to with touchpad to that. It sadly predated USB-C, so we can't just go and reuse them.

@utopify_org Yes, the Lap Dock is an additional screen for the phone. I stole the idea from @purism's recent post on the topic. Before I was looking to putting the phone into an envelope on the back of the Lap Dock's screen, as using just one screen is more performant.

@mobian @linmob @whynothugo @thewk I understand the 360 fixed some of the hardware issues in the 2 (e.g., it's much lighter), but the 2 has a frustrating ~20s auto power-off as soon as it loses the active display. Whenever the phone sleeps the display, the 2 powers down, cutting power and outright disconnecting the display on the phone's side. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get my hands on a 360 to compare. Would anyone with a 360 be willing to comment on whether this got fixed as well?

@jawsh @linmob I still prefer a full laptop case than a tablet with a keyboard in extra. It feels more robust to me. In any case, the phone as a touchpad for a laptop shell would def be the best solution for a 1st gen project.

@dannycolin @jawsh At least one of the Padfone models had a proper laptop style hinge, so it did not feel like a Surface (or similar "tablet + slim keyboard that's loosely connected), but way more solid, see https://i.ytimg.com/vi/PBTc3gn7jBE/maxresdefault.jpg for a picture of that hinge.

@dannycolin @jawsh Phone as a touchpad IMHO introduces non-necessary hardware and software design challenges (and limits device compatibility) - regular touchpads aren't that complicated and a well known target. What matters is that the phone has a place somewhere in or with the dock, and is not just loosely connected by USB-C cable like it is with the HP LapDock X3 or the NexDocks. The Motorola Lapdocks had that (behind the display in a special mount), so did the PadFone in a different way.

@linmob @dannycolin @jawsh I was able to get a pinephone with a custom kernel to be a usb keyboard, you could probably make it be a mouse without too much trouble.

@silverhax @dannycolin @jawsh Yes, but getting it to work for you is not what I am thinking about - I'm more worried about having _every_ distribution work well and get in touchpad mode in a way that does need a lot of fiddling by users. That's an entirely different challenge, just look into distro support for PinePhone accessories like the fingerprint scanner.

@linmobHave you been experiencing video output stability when using convergence? Using any usb-c dock, and the NexDock 360 (when mobile radio is on) always blanks the screen to the point where I cannot use convergence on any PinePhone OS. I'll record a video later to demonstrate what I am experiencing.

@TheCzar I have issues occasionally that I blame largely on the somewhat maybe deviant from spec PinePhone USB-C port that only works well with PINE64's USB cables that have a longer connector than usually. With that tiny cable I managed to make convergence a lot more stable - as long as nothing touches it - which is easier with a shorter cable.
