Let's have an #introduction for the #interpeer project. The project's mission is to develop next generation, human centric internet technologies. Today, the internet is usually equated with the web. Most likely the most useful view is to see both together as a stack that enables distribution of knowledge, data and media, as well as apps. We're looking at the entirety of this. The web is centralised. By design, it's decentralised, but its design contains elements that promote centralisation.

There is no generic update mechanism for data on a server (to be precise: only a fairly limited one). To mitigate that, it is possible to send code along with data to the client to be executed there, which can then construct an update request in the way the server will understand. That means that the data that is stored on the server, the API that provides access to it, the client code that accesses the API, and the data that are sent to the client for this reason are inseparably linked.

This creates a data silo, under control of the service provider. It is also only possible to provide this if the service provider has access to all of this data in plain text. End-to-end encryption and privacy is not intrinsically supported here, but only something a service provider may optionally offer for parts of the data.Giving access to your data to a server is fine. Thousands of people giving access to their data to a server means there is suddenly commercial value in correlating all.

That is, the web - due to its technical specification - has a built-in incentive for service providers to violate user privacy. Of course the web isn't to blame on its own. It's the market forces in the environment in which service providers operate that create this incentive, but the web does nothing to mitigate that. Call it a collaborator. One way of looking at the Interpeer Project's goals is to build an alternative stack to the web that does not collaborate.

In practice, that means that end-to-end encrypted updates to arbitrary data are one of the technical goals. It also must be simpler to add nodes to the network than on the web (which is simple enough for technically adept folk), and to run smaller nodes. That strongly suggest working towards distributed rather than merely decentralised architectures. Which in turn touches upon internet, rather than web technologies, because distribution raises routing issues.Privacy is not the only goal.

However, privacy is a goal that enables building safe spaces in which the other human rights are protected. On the internet, everything that makes your digital presence *you* is, after all, "just" data.We have a long way to go. But we're also not looking for quick band-aids. Those have not gotten us out of this mess in the past. It's time for a more fundamental reconsideration of what we actually want of this thing here that we've let seep into so many parts of our lives.
