@andyc Two probably. One for the funeral and one for the Coronation. I do so hope all the royal haters will say to their boss: "Oh, no thank you. I'd far rather work as I feel the royal family shouldn't exist, and therefore, I would be a hypocrite if I accepted those days off to mark those two events."Yeah, right.

@dick_turpin @andyc I'm fairly agnostic on the monarchy so I'll take the day off and probably go for a walk or something

@stardot Personally, I look at the royals as a marketing tool. I honestly think we get value for money out of them but also other benefits around the world in terms of trade and influence, especially within the Commonwealth.I kind of see the argument that Lords, knights etc. are an out-of-date archaic institutions.

@dick_turpin I can respect arguments on both sides. I think if we became a republic tomorrow I wouldn't be bothered, but I think we'd lose a bit of our identity at home and abroad. People find comfort in the monarchy like they do in going to church, I don't fully understand it myself but each to their own.

@stardot It's kinda of funny that pretty much all Brits have facets of our history hardwired into their DNA, and yet a good few seem to want to erase those institutions and customs. Some people can't get their heads around why we have a royal family; I can't get my head around why we wouldn't want one. 🤷‍♂️

@dick_turpin I think some people are more optimistic about what we'd gain without them. We would still have an unelected house of lords, hereditary titles, huge wealth inequality and are still being controlled by powerful elites, but now with less flag waving and familiar traditions. The only proper solution is a major overhaul over our society a la the French revolution but I don't think there's much appettite for that.

@stardot I love the French example. They got rid of their royal family and then adopted an Emporer. Amazingly, even today, they still miss Napoleon. 🤣

@stardot @dick_turpin @andyc I take 'the monarchy' and the individual monarchs separately; while fairly agnostic on the Monarchy, I'd have to say Liz seemed to have been a nice person for 70 years; not bad going.

@penguin42 Personally, I'd like Charles to step aside in favour of William and Kate, but that's not going to happen. The shockwaves of Edward VIII's abdication have only just settled.@stardot @andyc

@dick_turpin @stardot @andyc Yeh, Charles comes across as rather haughty; although I think that's just the terrible pronounciation he has.

@stardot If we look at it through today's eyes and values, there's a solid case to argue: "Doesn't he have a right to be happy?" It's obvious he loves Camilla, and yes, as we know, he always has done and yet, as usual with life, people wanted him to be unhappy and stick with Diana because they all loved her and couldn't give a toss about him.Begs the question. Should one stay in a loveless relationship just because others want you to?@penguin42 @andyc
