@jk this is nuts. Work gave me an iPhone 11 and it was stupidly large. I managed to "downgrade" myself to an SE but it's still bigger than it needs to be. If they make me carry one of these I'm going to put in an expense claim when I have to get all my pockets enlarged.

@jalefkowit @jk I remember when EU banned vacuum cleaners rated at more than 900W. There was outrage!For decades customers equated the power rating with actual usefulness (suction etc) of a vacuum cleaner. Of course vacuum cleaner manufacturers where happily supporting that misconception.Turns out banning 900W+ vacuum cleaners forced manufacturers to compete on other things. Comparing vacuum cleaners of today with ones available in 2017, I'd say that was a win.

@jk remember the old android tablets with the 7” screen size? New iPhone screen size is 6.7”. I mean look I transitioned my gender so no phone fits in my pocket at all anymore but even if I still had man pants I would not be able to carry that

i remember being pissed off when the iphone 5 came out because i could reach every corner of the screen of an iphone 4 using my thumb, and the 5 was the first one where you had to do the painful stretch (or the shimmy) if you wanted to use it one-handed. now i think theyve just given up on one-handed phones entirely. i have an iphone 12 mini and i have to do the fucking shimmy with my hand at least 20 times per day and i'm still sick of it. i've never got used to it. its just bad, bad design

i find myself holding the thing with two hands a lot, which i never had to do with the (original) iphone SE, let alone iphone 4. and it just feels wrong to hold something like that in two hands, wrong in the same way that something like a gameboy feels right? feels like im carefully passing a microscope slide to somebody or some shit

@jalefkowit they shouldve made the very first iphone a bit more annoyingly bulky, i think. maybe slightly more bezel around the screen, thicker than it should have been. and then each year they could have made it thinner and smaller. they couldve sold the jump to "retina" display as "twice as many pixels, in 10% less space!" then it would've set up the gradient going in the correct direction from the start, and that would be the desirability comparison function

@jk Good grief. I actually like bigger devices (because I have huge hands and fingers with not-the-best fine motor skills), but really, at some point shouldn't you just cart around a tablet and be done with it? Let phones be small!

@jalefkowit @jk this is pretty outdated but there were some stories floating around during the rise of "phablets" about how people bought huge phones because it was their only device. They didn't want or couldn't afford a laptop or computer and a phone, so they wanted a phone that could do "computer things."
