Apple is removing sim cards. That's going to suck for smaller carriers.

@thelinuxcast why though what is the benefit of that?

@jason123santa They gave many reasons, but apparently it lets you switch plans easier.Though from what I've read, the big carriers make it pretty damn hard to do it.

@benjaminhollon eSim. You'd put in a number or scan a qr code to set up your device

@thelinuxcast Ah. And this isn't something that would be available for smaller carriers? I'm partially concerned because my family lives in a developing country that probably wouldn't get innovations like this as soon.

@benjaminhollon I think it’s only the phones in the United States that are going to be losing the physical Sim card. At least for now. I assume once the ESIM stuff is more prevalent that will spread to other countries too. Probably by the time that stuff is more universal it’ll be OK hopefully

@thelinuxcast Fair enough. We do tend to use handed-down devices from relatives who are in the US, but I suppose with that method we won't be getting the newer models for a good long while.

@thelinuxcast My reasoning is that Apple removed it for further space saving SoC-esque integration on the board; resulting in a sleeker overall form factor.I reckon this can potentially be abused since there's no more ring-fencing (your eSIM is always active, and cannot escape the kernel and networking stack). Not a HW expert, so I could be wrong. But, I'm sure it won't be used for surveillance or signals intelligence by telcos and three-letter agencies in any way, shape, or form either. /s

@thelinuxcast I don't know a single time when my sim card changed when my plan did. But I guess if that is a reason then its a reason.

@thelinuxcast as a CDMA user, i find it relatable when the phone number is hardwired, and model choice is limited. Luckily, our operator moves to VoLTE since next January
