I wish I was in an environment which encourages learning things and sharing knowledge, even if it's irrelevant to one's work

@wolf480pl Are you speaking about your physical environment or something? Just asking because TBH I feel like fedi is pretty good at that (by internet standards)

@alex I mean both physical and internet, and idk I feel like fedi prioritizes cat pics and "just landed in LA" over knowledge sharing, but maybe I don't follow the right people. Also by internet standards I think topic-specific forums used to have a higher focus on knowledge sharing, but I haven't used any of those for a while. And nothing I've seen on fedi compares to the university I used to study at.

@wolf480pl I went to university twice and neither time did I really feel like I was in a supportive learning environment, I envy you....Someday I'd like to go back (for a THIRD TIME!!!) this time for psychology, and I'm hoping that might be more constructive, but for all I know it'll be a miserable time where people just focus on the most mundane "shit that works" (like CBT) and challenging orthodoxy is frowned upon. (Education was rather like that, nobody hates having the status quo shaken up more than state education officials and deeply embedded primary school teachers.)Not to state the obvious, but have you considered the dreaded Reddit? It seems like the subreddits for specific pursuits are actually pretty helpful. (But then again, the Reddit model could probably promote a lot of orthodoxy too considering how karma works.)

@alex well for me ubi wasn't perfect either, and a significant portion of the time it was "learn this stuff to pass an exam even if it's boring and nobody cares". But it had some great moments. The physics studens I've met were the best, we'd discuss so many crazy ideas and then calculate if they were feasible... such a shame I gave up on physics and went 100% compsci after the 3rd semester.

@alex sometimes, but those are the parts my boss doesn't like. Becuse I'm spending more time than nexessary on a task, in a way that doesn't benefit the company.

@alex and it's not my boss's fault, the pressure comes from above, and also we're a small team so kerping things running takes a significant portion of our time already...

@alex idk the part I saw during my MSc seemed to dedicate more effort to seeking grants and getting published than I'd be willing to. And none of the stuff they were researching really clicked with me.

@wolf480pl From reading through the thread, you may be looking for what i found when i joined the local hackspace.https://london.hackspace.org.uk/There should be one local to wherever you are. :D

@BillySmith also I did pay a visit to a hackerspace when I was in a larger city and it looked like lots of cool things that are barely maintained despite being what the members call "critical infrastructure". I have duct-taped critical infrastructure at home, and it stresses me out enough, I don't need more of it.Thanks for the suggestion tho.

@wolf480pl NP. :DI don't know where you live, so it may not have been a useful suggestion.I do know what you mean about some of their infrastructure. :DI became one of the lathe maintainers when we had a mini-lathe.I ended up making new components using scrap aluminium from HDD cases, using 3d-printed forms and sand-casting. :DWhile you may be living in a more rural space, you've got the advantages that those spaces gives you. It's difficult to get larger projects built in London.

@BillySmith I meant like a DIY smart door lock which sometimes glitches out which requires you to punch the door to hopefully bump the power cable and fix it.

@wolf480pl Caveat: I eventually moved to London from rural Scotland, so i remember what rural communities are like... :DWhile i don't know how much space you have access to, there are other people who are trying to find a better balance. There's one engineer whose job is based in Berlin, but who also runs a rural fablab:https://www.1769.eu/labAs he has 4 hectares of space, he can work on larger scale projects. :D

@wolf480pl Another project i volunteered on was building an anaerobic-digester from stock components,https://r-urban-wick.net/events/learn-to-build-an-anaerobic-digesterThe power came from two PV solar panels, and 1 heat-based panel. :DInputs are the food waste from ~90 people, and the energy from the panels, giving the outputs of fertiliser, and tanked methane.

@wolf480pl NP. TY. :DJust trying to get an idea about what suggestions i could make that would be practical/feasible for you. :DOne of the simplest ways of doing things for you persoanlly, would be to move to an urban area with a sufficient population denstiy to support a university. That's what i did. :DEvery city that i stayed in had a university, so there was always something interesting going on. :DThough that may not suit your personal circumstances.
