Has anyone here grown their own mushrooms? I'm not looking for anything crazy that will get me high or anything. I eat so many mushrooms that it gets expensive but I don't want to stop eating them. They're my favorite thing ever. So I figured growing is probably cheaper. I figured it would be easy, google seems mixed, but mostly positive..

@FeartnTired @Tiggy I was, but I can’t for the life of me remember who it was. Her Mr was experimenting with growing them in a bag of coffee grounds. AIUI, there are two main ways of doing it: either in a sealed container, keeping out everything but the right fungus spores, or out in the open on a log that’s been so thoroughly inoculated with the right spores that nothing else gets a chance to get a look in. You can just use shop mushrooms, too: https://grocycle.com/diy-mushroom-spawn/

@FeartnTired @Flick @Tiggy It was me. We had mixed results tbh. They took a few attempts to get going, fighting against the bad mould, mainly because we don't have a lot of kitchen space, so clearing a sterile environment for prep wasn't always easy. We played about a bit too and using old grinds didn't do the job, it had to be grinds from freshly brewed stuff, so no collecting over time or from other people which might have made it a bit more economical. Another problem was they were started off at just too cold a time of year and once spouting were in a plastic green house in the yard for protection that didn't offer enough oxygen, so we got a couple, but not the mammoth haul that was promised. What we did get was excellent quality though, really delicious silver oysters if I recall the type correctly and I definitely think the coffee grinds was a good idea, for us anyway as we have a lot spare and free. They actually thrived when left for dead a few times too., so we got some unexpected crops pop up in the spring when things started to get a wee bit warmer. I think we'll try again though and soon, maybe even find a space indoors for the whole process, see if that's any better.

@Tiggy I grew white oyster mushrooms off cheap toilet paper rolls once. Super easy in humid, 70+ temps.

@Tiggy I've grown oysters in a bag that I inoculated at a mushroom conference with Dr. Cornelia Cho (this workshop uses the same method.) I also have a few friends who have cultivated wine caps in their garden and inoculated some logs to grow shiitakes.
