Ooooh, I feel your pain. Witch hazel is my new favorite anti-itch remedy. In general I recommend plantain leaves (not the banana, the weed) chewed up and applied liberally. @ninapaley

I've been away from Spinster so long, I've kinda forgotten how it works... Or I just have a terrible feed.

@MandyJane @ninapaley It totally seems like an "end of the year, aren't we such good allies, look at our edgy, woke aesthetic!" It was cringey and gross.

@MandyJane @ninapaley I only became familiar with the company after their recent "boy destroys house and craft supplies while mom and sister watch" debacle.

@nina I like the faster frenetic feel on the right, but that might be because it feels more smooth? I can't parse why I prefer it exactly. The left feels clunky for me.

The Houston Women's group has been around since the 1970s. I was invited to their group to talk about my not-yet-started RadFem group. The woman who invited me sent me a note when she saw a man had RSVP'd on the Meet-up announcement. She told me that this was a Woman Only space and had been since the 70s. That was really exciting for me to hear. I arrived and was met with signs talking about mandatory mask rules. My host told me I could probably leave mine off once we were in the meeting. The women arrived. During a political discussion of local politics, I mentioned that I was a single issue voter right now. If a politician cannot separate sex from gender, or thinks someone can change sex, they do not have my vote. There was a disturbed silence. One woman told me I was throwing the baby out with the bath water. I replied that I didn't think women getting raped by male inmates in prison was merely "bathwater." Eventually another woman told me that they've never, not once, talked about gender and all that, but that it would be great if I could come back in the future for that specific topic. They invited me and a couple other visitors (one delightful radfem, another just a cool random new visitor) to lunch after the gathering. I mostly talked with the other new ladies. In the end I had a long discussion with a woman in her late 70s about the trans issue, and she kept talking about those "truly trans" people and how we need to think about them, not the ones who are just faking it for attention. I told her that neither I nor the trans community agree with her on this. I don't think there is such a thing as "truly trans" that's more than simple body dysphoria. And the TRA crowd doesn't put up with that kind of gate keeping of trans identities. This women DID NOT understand that most trans identified men don't have bottom surgery, some don't even shave. She didn't believe me. We agreed to disagree. Left lunch feeling that these old school feminists with their 47 year old Women's Group might be a place I could visit on a regular basis. Then, this morning I get a text from the woman who had originally invited me, "T, we always welcome new women to our women's group on Sundays. I believe we need to clarify, that we are an inclusive group and welcome all women, including transgender women. And we have transgender women that join our group, and they are always accepted and welcome. My apologies for any confusion that I may have made on the church's mask policy, as a mask must be worn at all times. Thank you for your understanding." But this wasn't just sent to me, it was also sent to some other number, who replied, "E, well written with no judgment, temperance clarity, and buttresses by the mask rules and our covenant . .Also you gave her some intentional kindness, grace if there was some mis understanding on her part about the inclusiveness of our women's group. Your response was appreciated by [6 women's names] and myself. I sent a copy to J also. In gratitude E love I."The second woman is I. She was the woman in the meeting who invited me to come back for a discussion devoted to gender/trans stuff. She's also very old and not tech savvy and likely has no idea that I saw her reply to E. I'm currently trying to figure out how to respond. Probably something simple, but clear that I prioritize women only spaces. Who knows. okay. My novel is over. Maybe that icky feeling of being rejected all over again will go away.

@Hollahollara @earlgrey It's the First Unitarian Universalist church where they meet. I don't even carry masks around with me anymore. So, everyone I saw in the building were all wearing N95s, homemade cloth masks, some were double masked. It was definitely a strange sight to see here in Houston. They also had about a dozen women zooming in to the meeting which took up so much time for technical difficulties. It's not a giant loss that I won't be returning regularly, as it was a 45 minute drive from my house, and I HATE wearing masks as it just feels like modern religious symbology and I've never done well performing rituals for other people without a good reason. [If they told me, "this is a church that believes in masking as a way of showing our devotion to our values" I would have done it. But the signs were all talking about "following the science" and "CDC recommendations." So, I got cranky, because it isn't science based if they are just handing out little paper masks.]

@LadyMont The moment my family crawled out of poverty I've been in this middle wasteland. My siblings couldn't go to college because they couldn't get the scholarships I did, but got zero grant money and my parents wouldn't sign loans. Don't blame them. I have no idea if/how my own kids are going to do the college thing. We certainly can't pay for it.

@nenetl How can someone fight for any policy affecting women when women are being legally erased? I've got two teenage GNC daughters. Perhaps it's hyperbole on my part that I describe myself as a single issue voter. It's just easiest when talking about how all my issues are intertwined with recognizing reality.

@tangleofsnakes My skin reacts badly to metals, leather, cordage and many plastics. The only piece I ever wore was my white gold nose ring, but that got snagged, bent and hasn't gone back in for a year now. So, no jewelry for me at all anymore.

Any ideas for a simple, not too controversial, opening Consciousness Raising question for a new group? Everything I keep thinking of is perfect for people like me who love instantly diving into politics and have no problem (over) sharing with new people. But I want to be friendly to newbies... so... Nothing feels simple anymore. My first group started with "What is a woman?" but that feels like an advanced question now even for supreme court justices, so not a great opener?

@Tiggy I've grown oysters in a bag that I inoculated at a mushroom conference with Dr. Cornelia Cho (this workshop uses the same method.) I also have a few friends who have cultivated wine caps in their garden and inoculated some logs to grow shiitakes.
